Public disgust with both parties has never been higher, the timing is right, but it will take three things. 1. The electoral college has to go. It is designed to keep third parties from emerging. 2. The winner-takes all primary system has to go. It is designed to keep third parties from emerging. 3. Politicians with balls who are willing to risk leaving the folds of their parties and taking a chance.
The first two depend on the politicians that spend their life fighting for power to make the changes needed. That isn't going to happen without a full scale revolution. The system is set up and controlled to keep a 3rd party out and the two sharing power are very very very unlikely to invite change that threatens their power and control. It is fun to dream though.
