I still think JJ looks pretty damn good. Sure he doesn't understand this complicated look to the sideline confused over-coached pathetic offensive playbook we have right now. Heck he is still just a kid learning the ropes. I'm not ready to throw him to the fire because of others.
I don't think fans want to throw him under the bus yet. They are just frustrated that he hasn't shown any improvement over the off season and first 6 games. He has played pretty bad for the most part although there are signs of good things to come. It's normal for fans to critique poor QB play and it's normal for them to want to find a solution for that poor play even if it means changing QB's.
JJ had one good half and one bad half. In the first half, he was nervous and his throws tended to sail on him. But he seemed aware of things, got out of the pocket and ran when there didn't seem to be much there with pressure building. I think he only had two incompletions (maybe three) at half despite throwing the ball a little high a few times. Of course, the coaches didn't even give him a chance inside the 10 to get a TD by throwing or running on his own and that's on them. The Int. at the end of the half was no big deal because we were just trying to make something happen with a little time left. It did seem like Toliver was supposed to cut all the way out and didn't, but who knows? In the 2nd, he just wasn't aware of things. He took too many sacks again and didn't take chances. That will kill you against great teams. He has got to start risking some things. It appears that he is scared to make a mistake and you can't be that way. You have to be cautious and play smart. But you also have to know when it is time to take some risks. He didn't know when to take risks Saturday night. Also, our O-line has certain parts of the game where their protection breaks down for a few plays in a row and that isn't helping since he holds the ball too long. With that said, he has still done well for us despite our playcalling and use of talent (our biggest problems). I know we had one play where he lined up in the shotgun, faked it to our RB and ran it. The result was a nice pickup and a 1st down (because the D had to think!). Then we never ran it again. This would be the way to make our offense much better. LSU coaches have basically taken the running part out of Jefferson's game and what you have is a completely predictable offense. I don't understand that at all. They should be running the majority of our plays like that. We've run better out of the shotgun this year because the D is not 100% sure about what is coming unlike when we line up in some of these other formations. Florida doesn't have an outstanding passing game. Tebow was 11/17 for 120+ and JJ was 11/16 for 96. You take out the TD that should have been called back and their numbers are basically the same. Florida is a running team and they do it usually with four different guys (Tebow & three RBs). On each play there are usually three possibilities and you don't know who the hell is getting the ball. A couple of their backs are much faster than ours, but the playcalling is where it's at. Their coaches do a great job with that. The one time I thought we had Tebow and his pitch option covered, they shuffled it to the tight end (Hernandez) for a big pickup. They make it really hard on the D. Our coaches aren't doing that right now. The good news is that Florida's D is awesome. I can't say I really saw any open receivers streaking Satruday night that LSU didn't connect with. With most teams, it won't be like that. But we've got to improve on O and JJ has to start taking chances or pulling it down and running faster. Otherwise, we'll struggle with a number of teams.
i just want him to learn to step up in the pocket instead of retreating when guys are coming around the corner
it's the one complaint I have of his. Once he learns how to do that I think we will be ok. He has a good arm and he's accurate (albeit he does throw a bit high before he settles into the game)
