Last year comes to mind vs. Florida. Had we not fumbled early on the goal line, we win I think. Then we end up beating OSU in the NC game. Or, take away any of the plays we were screwed over on in the Auburn, game, same scenario.
LSU-Tenn 1959. Billy Cannon at the goal line. As the defending #1 and ranked #1, we had already beat Ole Miss (#3 at the time). We are behind very late in the 4th quarter and make it to Tenn's goal line. On 4th down Cannon takes the ball and plunges over left tackle for goal line. Ref's rule no TD. Film is very questionable but looks like TD. Still photos look even more like TD (but they were very conservative with marking forward progress in those days). Change that a TD, LSU finishes undefeated again and does not have to meet Ole Miss in re-match at Sugar Bowl (where we lost convincingly -- in part because it was clear Cannon [a senior] was already going to the new AFL for extra money) where we were disinterested in the rematch, while Ole Miss was sky-high. We get a second national title. In fact, even during the 1958 national title season, lots of people were already pointing to "next year" when we would be really good. Kind of like last year's team, which supposedly was going to be stronger than this year's team, but did not even win SEC, much less get in BCS title game. Happenstance kills you every time.
Great answer! This game would have given us the SEC title, and put us in the Sugarbowl ranked number one, playing for the NC. (Syracuse did finish undefeated and #1 that year). It will be hard to come up with a better answer than this one!
It was actually a 2 point conversion that Cannon was stopped short on, not a touchdown. Durel Matherne scored the touchdown. He was subbing for Warren Rabb who was injured earlier in the game.
Thank you for the input. For those who don't know, the game ended 13-14, so the conversion would have won the game.
Well, since you asked I guess I'll answer. I would change the bobbled extra point by Nebraska in the 1st quarter of the 1976 opener in Baton Rouge. Instead of a 7-6 NU victory, the Huskers and Tigers tied 6-6 :yelwink2:
