    http://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...d6b41c-a3a4-11e2-9c03-6952ff305f35_print.html

This is an interesting article and something for all sides of the welfare issue.

    * Florida is the fastest growing state for food stamp enrollment.
    * The Federal Govt actively recruits food stamp recipients.
    * Florida has lost more wealth than any other state, post 2008.
    * Food stamps bring much needed money into the state economy which is a benefit for all people in the state.
    * The elderly, who have lost their retirement and would benefit from food stamps the most, don't apply because of their beliefs.

The article brings real world experiences to the debate, not just theory.

I find something wrong in hiring (basically) sales people to recruit people for food stamps when the talk in Washington has been about cutting spending and reducing the deficit. However, many people's best laid plans for retirement were destroyed in 2008 and have lost everything and have nothing to live on now. I wish there was a better way of seperating the true needy from the greedy.

The problem with this subject that is if you are opposed to welfare, the for some reason you hate people or want poverty.

My issue is that it seems like we just give shit away with no screening. Like Obama Phones and soon to be Obama internet.

I have no problem with welfare and its root intention. However, I want these people to be screened for drugs, find out who is capable of working, and put into a system to improve our society/economy by becoming apart of it.

Now before I get attacked, I know some people just can't work for a variety of reasons, I get that and its fine. However, I see food stamps in Texas going out all the time to lard asses with Iphones.

My point? We need a better system to monitor these people and help them, not just buy votes by giving them money.

Cell phone subsides were voted into law by a Republican Congress and signed into law by a Republican president. Obama is terrible, but let's hold our ass hat leaders accountable for the shit they actually did.

Why? These measures are expensive and have been ineffective everywhere they have been implemented. They increase government spending. Why are you for that?

Most wellfare recipients do work or are children.

Like the myriad of workforce development programs that are already required?

I have no problems spending money on actually helping people. So if it cost money for a system that gives money to people who really need it, drug test them, put them in work programs and give them a path to be apart of society, I am all for it. We waste far more money in other places to cut and pay for it.

Tell me what workforce development program is attached to food stamps? That is only based on income. Hell I qualified for it while on active duty and I didn't even need it. I didn't have to do anything to get it but sign up.

No shit, but not all and the abuse is well documented. The Phone shit cost 2 billion last year.

OK great, Obama still continued it. Blame them all, I don't give a shit. Obamaphone is a cool name so STFU.

Reagan started it, Bush expanded it, and Obama continued it and also to include internet.

Please brother, I think they are all terrible. Don't get it twisted.

But should the govt drive around and look for people to give phones, or food stamps to? It seems counter to the direction we should be going. If a person isn't looking for a handout should they be convinced that they should take it? The lady in the article has a monthly quota. That sounds a little ridiculous.
