more deserving of the NL Cy Young than Tim Hudson, then I don't know who that man is. 14-5 3.02 ERA in the "what have you done for me lately category", he is 8-0 with a 2.39 ERA in his last 10 starts and 6-0 in his 7 starts after the all-star break. it's not like he is beating the Devil Rays in these starts. He has recorded wins over the D-Backs, Mets, Rockies and Cardinals, aka. the hottest teams in the NL.
absolutely. those were the first 2 guys who I thought of. how about chris young's .66 era at home this year. the best in baseball history at this point of a season. he is 9-3 i believe and after last night should have a whip below 1.00 and a sub 2.00 era. peavy is likely to win it since the idiot voters look at wins instead of more telling stats. although peavy is close to deserving it already and is clearly overpowering most of the time. brandon webb cant be ruled out as he is finishing strong again. what hudson has done has been impressive post-break and the voters will look at him if he keeps winning despite overall numbers. wins are as much luck as anything and impossible to predict.
Young is 9-4 with a 1.93 Peavy 13-5 with a 2.23 Webb 12-8 with a 2.77 Hudson 14-5 with a 3.02 If the Braves outduel the Pad for the wildcard or even win the east and it's because Hudson is like 13-1 after the break or 11-1, he will win it. call it unfair, call it whatever, but the writers love players who perform down the stretch. that's why chipper won his MVP. either way it's a great race. Edit: I would be a lot more comfortable if tim were 16-5, but having bob wickman does that to a starter.
what im sayin is wins are a reflection of a team moreso than a pitcher that day. therefore, if his team performs late and piles up his total to 19 wins or so he is gonna get a strong look and likely win it even if his peripheral numbers that measure his true ability suck. thats why the baseball writers suck. give it to the dude with the best overall pitching numbers in spite of the team. 1.93? that is pretty insane but .66 at home even moreso. good race. young is going to have to get a few more wins to be a legit candidate unfortunately. he deserves it for fighting big ass derrek lee and for graduating from princeton.
no, man, i agree 100%. you can go 5 IP and give up 7 ER and win one day and go 8 IP and give up 1 ER and lose the next. I agree 100% that wins aren't all that.
i know you're an NL guy but we shouldnt be discussing pitching without mentioning erik bedard. not only is johan not the best pitcher in the AL this year he's not even the best lefty. dig up bedard's stats post-break. he's been unhittable im pretty sure. talk about bullpens who kill their starter, i think erik has a case for quite a few blown by that crap makeshift pen in baltimore. peter angelos is a such a disaster of an owner.
Jake Peavy may be the most deserving. It is hard to believe that he ever wins a game with the offense the Padres bring to the table when he pitches. Of course the same could be said for Webb. But Peavy has been for more dominating.
