Its pretty simple... He didn't have 25 picks in the first three rounds of the NFL draft, which would be the equivalent to a top recruiting class filled with 5 and 4-stars...
Exactly. When he had average talent he went 6-6 and lost to Louisiana-Monroe. After that humiliation he probably then decided to play the game (off the field) the historical Alabama way.
He's a great college coach; but I don't think he would ever be more than a good pro coach. His recruiting skills don't translate into key NFL skills. And that's part of his formula; keep the talent deck stacked in your favor. I think furduknfish had it about right, but the assholes in the sack are clinched - and he doesn't want to let go of shit. He can control everything at Bama. At Bama does't have a salary cap (allegedly), an owner, a front office . . . . he would have to get along with people in the NFL. AND he would have to learn to deal with a lot more losses. I just don't see it working
Saban chose Daunte Culpepper coming off a knee injury over Drew Brees coming off of a torn labrum affecting his throwing arm. Had he picked Brees he would still be in the NFL.
Not only that, but what do you think would happen if he blew a gasket at Suh or Wake (I know they weren't even in college back then) or any other star player? Probably wouldn't end well for ole Sabes.
