....and the title was "How to Lose at Football," Chapter One would be: Make Sure You Settle for Field Goal Attempts Whenever Possible.
The answer is to graduate the points for field goal. Outside 20, 1 point. Outside 40, 2 points. Outside 50, 3 points. Better yet, get rid of that bitch altogether! The less time kickers are on the field, the better.
Field goals keep games interesting and stressful. It allows poor offenses to score and good defenses to win games. Where would Miles be without field goals?
2008 really scarred Miles. Before then we used an imaginative offense. Then from 2009 on, nothing but archaic 1970s stuff.
My philosophy when I coached was that if we were inside your ten yard line, its TD or bust... Opportunities to get a TD can be rare. If we don't get it, we are going to stuff your ass and get good field position... Most HS punters shank under pressure.
Chapter 2. Run the same plays out of the same formation so that the other team can predict the exact lane you are going to run in. Chapter 3. When things aren't working stubbornly refuse to change. Don't believe your eyes they lie.
i came up with this change long ago. have the uprights be adjustable. move them within a foot for 10 points or whatever. wide for one point. then the game can become all about fg kickers instead of qbs. since we cant develop those. australians are mostly developed already anyhow.
Develop an f'ing QB and you won't have to worry much about giving points to the distance of a field goal.
