I didn't say the outcome of every single game was dependent on superior athletes.

Nutrition and health care over 2 generations have changed the whole population so much that the 27 Yankees wouldn't win a AAA league championship. People are bigger and in better health by large margins. In general we are taller than our fathers and have more muscle. I don't think if the 27 Yanks had the same training from birth they would be as good as today's team. When I compare teams from different eras I compare how they performed atheletically among their peers and skill levals as opposed to ability to defeat a team from another era in a game. For example in the 1960s a NFL offensive line weighed 240 lbs vs over 300lbs today. They were 6'2" tall vs 6'5" faster more agile etc. It may be closer in baseball but as others have said pitchers are so much stronger. Imagine the Babe facing Justin Verlander.

I think the 27 yankees would be about to take about 2 or 3 games out of 10. Just not the athletes there are today.

The '27 Yankees would get blasted every time out, by any team in the majors today. And most college teams. 'Course, those guys would all be over 100 years old today. :D

Seriously, the pitching today vs then is so vastly different. And not just the speed; there was no way to measure a pitcher's velocity in '27, and we all assume they saw a lot less heat in their day. But what I'm thinking is that managers back then were much more likely to let the starter finish the game. Hitters would see pitchers 3-4 times in a game, and usually had him figured out before he got the hook. Today, hitters often only get 2 looks at the starter before he's gone. The training and scouting the hitters get on today's pitchers helps them make the adjustment, but I think guys that aren't used to seeing 3 or even 4 different pitchers in one game are going to struggle more.

The '27 Yankees would probably be just as fast as todays athletes with all the greenies they were popping.
