Asked specifically Saturday whether he believes he needs to “adapt” his offense, Miles said, “I don’t think there’s any question. “I think we have a mobile quarterback. I think we have a guy that can throw it,” he continued. “I still think we can have balance, but I don’t think there is any question that that offense needs to be adapted, to be fixed and adjusted.” the Advocate sums up his problem - he just doesn't know. We can all agree the Miles is a decent coach, a good guy and a great drinking buddy but he's not a D1 top tier coach. Be be at the stage of the season with players he recruited and to be "thinking" that he has something or not - that's not a good sign. If he's involved with the offense then there is no thinking about it - he's part of the problem and probably a large part of the problem. During the game, he's always 4 or 5 ticks behind the play - he gets distracted or is scheming a gadget play. Can't make adjustments at half time - he's pretending to coach. He's writing checks with his ego he can't cash. Not to have the team ready to play - having them fight in a game - that's all on him. Miles deserves one more year - just cause we can't hire a coach on a whim. Maybe he'll wake up and realize that he's not the coach he has imagined in his own mind about himself, but he's got to snap out of this bullshit and now. If Chavis wants payback - he'll get it this weekend. I think he is ready to show Miles that he is a clown with his offensive schemes.
Well, I don't know about all of that. Miles can't get out of his own way, that is true, and he muffs shit up a HC shouldn't, but you don't just get by for a decade w/10+ wins a year, and compete in the SECW, if you are in over your head as a D-1 top tier coach. CLM did some great stuff here, it's just that he's worn out his welcome and it's time to move on.
He definitely does not need another year...no sense in prolonging the inevitable. What makes you think we're gonna hire a coach on a whim? Season is still going on, no other teams needing a coach have hired one yet , so as long as the AD and BoS do their job and be diligent in searching there's no reason we shouldn't get a proven coach.
You're right - probably doesn't need another season. But it's hard to see the AD as being diligent. He reacted impulsively with Miles extension.
If it took this long and getting to the point of being fired for him to figure out it's broke, I don't trust him to be smart enough to fix it.
As strange as it sounds, Les never really seemed to know what the complete identity of his offense should be. He always has and always will love him some Big-10 power football. But consider his OC's post-Jimbo. Crowton had a rep as a spread "wizard", which made sense with Perrilloux as the starter in waiting. When he didn't work out, we were stuck with a pocket passer and a mobile QB who never could grasp his system. We then grab Mett and Cam to run a very different pro-style offense, but recruit Jennings and Harris for wheels that would better fit a spread or read-option system. It's the most schizophrenic damn thing.
