Please help me to understand what went on today.

I have seen innumerable posts saying that he's a great guy, pretty good recruiter, has integrity, yadda yadda yadda. I have never, ever disputed any of these claims. I have met him in groups and one one one several times and found him to be quite charming and intelligent. A quality individual. A good guy to have a beer with and hang out. This is NOT the issue I need help with.

For those who are adamant that he is a truly good football coach, I'd like to understand how you measure that. I see the argument that he wins lots of games.

Here's what I'd like you to tell me:

How many football games has Les Miles coached at LSU where the Tigers didn't have a clearly more physically talented football team during his tenure? How many of those few games where our talent was equal or inferior to our opponents has LSU won by "outcoaching" the other team?

If a team is more talented they are supposed to win, so I give little coaching credit to those wins. A good, or as many contend, great coach is one who wins games he's not supposed to win. Yes, there will be times that injuries and other factors are mitigating circumstances.

How well has our talent been "coached up"? Are players consistently making progress in the physical and mental aspects of the game each season under coach Miles? Do our teams control or make progress in the lack of discipline type penalties like personal fouls, false starts, offsides, delay of game, etc?

Do Les Miles coached teams "sac up" in crunch time? During and individual game or during the stretch of the season?

Do Les Miles coached teams lose games they really should win pretty handily? Do they "play down" to the level of their competition and have heart stopping down to the wire games that should have been put out of reach by halftime?

Do coach Miles routinely mismangage the game clock, play clock, and timeouts to the point of losing football games?

If you want to rationally discuss or refute the points I've mead, please feel free to post. If you only care to flame or post how great his wining record is, please don't. Again, I'm not disputing that' he's won many games during his tenure. My contention is that the vast majority of the wins were wins that should be expected give the resources and talent at his disposal.

I don't think you know very much about football.

    Just my opinion.

Well I have no answer for today. It wasnt Mile's finest hour for sure.
    But this statement
"Do Les Miles coached teams lose games they really should win pretty handily"

LSU were underdogs in their three losses this year. Which games has LSU lost they were supposed to win handily ? Again not trying to rip your post. I am just curious. Which ones are you referring to ?

LSU was the underdog based solely on their performance againt La Tech. LSU has more talent and should have won the game. LSU has more talent and less coaching. The difference in the game tonight was clearly coaching on the offensive side of the ball.

Send him your book RED. I am sure once he is done with it, he will then instantly KNOW football.

I got my copy, and I cant thank you enough. it may take a while to soak in though, remember none of us lowly football fans are as inept as you at knowing football. oh great one.

There's no excuse for letting the clock go from :27 to :09 when the only logical course of action was to call timeout.

But all the idiots calling for firing Miles are idiots. They don't understand how good of shape the program is in, how much talent Miles is recruiting, and many good BCS teams across the country, would trade coaching staffs with LSU right now.

Maybe its the case of beer they drank, or the half bottle of Jack. Maybe they just are too young to remember the decade where we probably averaged 4-5 wins a season. Maybe they're just miserable SOBs who only like to post on the board when things go wrong. I'm not sure.

But firing the most successful LSU coach, and maybe the best recruiter, in a long, long time because there was a mistake made (however heinous) in the last seconds of a difficult SEC road game?

The idiots calling for Miles' nugget are spoiled brats. And I'd be willing to bet 70% of them or more have never started a down of football past Pop Warner.

What I want to see posted is the list of quality teams we've beaten these last two years and not some of the cream puff teams we play. I know this is opinion based but I am just curious how LSU holds up. Les has lots of wins for sure but how many are against quality programs?

but what about his other points? i think he asked valid questions. and maybe he doesn't know very much about football... which is why he asked the questions that he did.

i don't know what to think about this, but i'm not going to make any crazy statements this soon after a loss. nor am i going to question our coaching, because honestly, i wouldn't even know where to begin. :hihi:

I bet Mississippi State fans want to slap us in the mouth

I can't apologize for what happened tonight. There isn't an excuse. But firing Miles just doesn't seem logical at this point.
