but if I were Les Miles and I happened to be watching this South Carolina game where Spurrier is deciding to throw when he is 27 points above the, obviously sub-par, opponent I would decide to crush his team into oblivion for such a classless move. This is just uncalled for, especially since NC State was giving them a run for their money in the first half until the QB was carted off. I hope LSU gives the "good" ol' ball coach a taste of his own medicine. Other than that, WHO IS READY FOR SOME SMASH MOUTH, LSU FOOTBALL?
I used to think that way until you realize how valuable getting your backups quality playing time is. USC's starting qb threw 4 picks in the first game. Their offense looked PITIFUL with him in there and so did their offense line. I don't think Spurrier was doing it to "rub it in". It appeared Smelley was the better qb and probably will get the start next Saturday. Getting him quality snaps before they start playing SEC games is a must and not really an option. Having him go out there and hand off just for the sake of not embarrassing the other team is really secondary. His primary responsibility is to get his team better and get them better as fast as he can. I would have done the same thing and made it a point to let the other coach know that after the game.
I agree with BB on this one. That said, the score was NOT indicitive of the game, and USCe did not impress me at all. The late scores were against an absolutely defeated defense.
Spurrier would have been an idiot not to keep "working the kinks out" because they looked horrible on offense for the most part. OL couldn't block me or you and they've definitely got QB problems. Smelley came in when the NCS defense was mentally whooped.
just to add to what everyone else said, this ain't exactly the first time Spurrier's passed with a big lead. Of all coaches known for doing that, he's gotta be in the top two.
Understatement. 1st quarter: 34 yards 2nd quarter: 57 yards 3rd quarter: 49 yards 140 yards in the first 3 quarters. Against NCST!!
Spurrier has been often criticized for running up the score on opponents during his time at Florida, right? Is this one game the first time you've considered this? And as for giving Spurrier a taste of his own medicine, you did see what Miles did to him last year, right?
In other words, I'm pretty sure LSU people have told Coach Miles about what Steve Spurrier did to LSU when he was at Florida: [Compare to the current 34-0 win by Spurrier's South Carolina over NC St] 2001: beat us 44-15 (Saban) 2000: beat us 41-9 (Saban) 1999: beat us 31-10 (Dinardo) 1998: beat us 22-10 (Dinardo) 1997: LOST 21-28 -- GEAUX TO HELL SPURRIER!!! (Dinardo) 1996: beat us 56-13 (Dinardo) 1995: beat us 28-10 (Dinardo) 1994: beat us 42-18 (Hallman) 1993: beat us 58-3 (Hallman) 1992: beat us 28-21 (Hallman) 1991: beat us 16-0 (Hallman) 1990: beat us 34-8 (Archer)
I agree with BB here too. Their quarterback play was woeful last night. He needs to get the work in. There's no preseason in CFB so you have to get your guys reps when you can. I see nothing wrong with it.
