just want to say one thing I miss as a kid is LSU football on the radio on a Saturday night. Back in the late 60's/early 70's my daddy and I would listen to the games in south Alabama, near the Georgia line. Way back in Charlie Mac's day. Auburn is, has always been, always will be No. 1 but for Daddy and me LSU was our number 2 favorite team. He and Mama lived the first year or two after they got married in Bogaloosa (sp). He loved Louisiana. I can hear him right now singing, "Way down yonder in New Orleans, the Bobcat..." and ending with a rousing "Hold that Tiger!" Grew up hearing, "I Gair-roan-tee!" long before I ever heard Justin Wilson say it. I know this is a stupid post...but what the heck. What was the play by play man's name back then and is there a site that might have some of his calls. Let's have another nail biter for the ages this Saturday at Jordan-Hare. Thanks
Welcome to the board. A quick google search didn't pull up anything. If you find some, let us know. I've got memories also of sitting in the truck, parked on a hill, and listening to LSU football with my dad. Those are truly great memories. Dad grew up listening to the games on the radio...I don't think he saw his first game until his late teens. At an early age, my family and I started attending as many games as possible. Later on we were fortunate enough to acquire season tickets. Going to the games is nice but it's hard to replace those Saturday night's parked up on a hill and listening to WWL. Great memories indeed.
Wasn't it John Ferguson? His voice is embedded in my memory. My did would get a legal pad and scetch a football field on it. He's draw out each play showing yardage gains, etc...as we listened to John Ferguson call the game on the radio. I think that's when I first got into football as a kid. That's my earliest memory of those Saturday nights, and trying to envision the game as it played out. Gotta luv it.
It WAS Walter Hill and John Ferguson ... Me and my ole pop were listening since 19 and 57 ... hooting and hollering ... we had an ole miss fan in town and when (rarely) ole miss would win ... he rode thru town blowing his horn and flying his rebal flag... good times and good memories... I'm now in the land of heathens ... Arizona .. my Mom and I read a lot of western novels .. especially Zane Grey... I did get to go to the LSU UA and ASU games ... it was GREAT ...
As a small child, my Dad and some of his friends or brothers would take me fishing or hunting on weekends during football season. We were always on a houseboat in the spillway, the camp on Blind River, or at the deer camp listening to games on the radio, havin a TV out there wasn't even considered I guess. I miss the AM radio "sound". I have trouble recalling the last time I wasn't either watching a game on TV or was actually in Tiger Stadium, probly when I was standing in a friend's wedding during the loss to UAB in '00.
Thanks for the info guys! John Ferguson, that's right. Enjoyed reading your posts. I can't say good luck tomorrow but win or lose, we'll all get our money's worth when these two tie up. Hey, thanks for the link COramprat.
Living in Ga........... Yes, I too remember listening to John Ferguson on 870 WWL radio when I was growing up in Kenner, La.. My entire family was diehard LSU fans and every Sat. nite the radio was tuned to WWL. I eventually went to LSU in 1968-69 and attended all the home games and the LSU/Tulane game. Those were great times and no better place to watch LSU win than in Death Valley and Tulane Stadium. Sometime when the conditions are just right, I can still pick up WWL here in Ga. They have always had top notch broadcasters doing thier games, but now with LSU being on TV almost every week, who needs the radio.................:geauxtige
