Islstl and Jean are right in their assessment of Jimmy boy's skills, and it's tough for me to listen to at times, but I've become accustom to him screwing up from time to time and can overlook it. Besides, good ole Doug Moreau has his back and usually covers for his mistakes.
Every once in a while I find myself a bit annoyed by his inexplicable name mix-ups (How and why would Jack Hunt even be on the field to catch the Bluegrass Miracle?) However... There is no one else on Earth I want to hear when I listen to the Tigers play. Sorry Jean Laffite.
Indeed, that's the only way that you'll follow the action as it occurs . . . watching the game on TV whilst listening to Hawthorne.
I like Hawthorne also, although i don't think he is a great play by play guy.I listen to a lot of games on the radio and Hawthorne is above average. There are some good ones in the SEC in bob kessling at Tennessee and Jack Chrystal at Moo U. However most fans complain about whoever their play by play guy is. Alabama was complaining about Eli Gould yesterday. I will say that Doug Moreau is one of the best color guys out there. I do remember Ferguson and Walter Hill and liked them .I also remember people complaining about Ferguson . For LSU it was "he busts through the line for ...1 Yard." For the other team, his call was ."He is stopped for a short gain.It will be second and three".My dad hated that.
WELL I LISTENED TO HIM LAST NIGHT THOUGHT IT WAS OK .THE TIGERS WERE A BIT SLOW , BUT IN THE 2ND HALF PUT THE GAME AWAY, I KNEW WHO HAD THE FOOTBALL , WHICH TEAM , EVEN WHICH PLAYER. BUT, THEN I DRINK COMMUNITY COFFEE .
Jim Hawthorne is awesome. I listened to Auburn/UGA yesterday. I listened to Larry Munson doing the UGA broadcast which is AWFUL. I also listened to a bit of the Auburn crew's call, and they are not very entertaining either.
Hawthorne drives me nuts most of the time. He's great when the Tigers score, but Moreau has to dig him out of his "brain farts" a lot. If he weren't there to do that, the broadcast would be awful. It doesn't help when LSU is less than perfect (a lot this year) and Hawthorne gets whiney. Some games I have listened to on the radio and thought that we were playing about 50 times worse than we actually were (and was surprised when I watched the game later that it wasn't nearly as bad as he sounded). The complaining on top of him not letting me know what's going on on the field drives me nuts. During the Tulane game, Tulane had the ball and gained some yards. Hawthorne didn't say exactly how many they gained, but he made it sound like they got a first down and went on and on and on about how bad LSU looked and how Tulane was running all over us. Then Moreau pipes up with "gain of two". I have great affection for Hawthorne, because he's the only announcer I remember listening to. I know the TV announcers aren't necessarily any better than he is. But I am having a harder and harder time listening to him, and I look forward to the day Moreau takes over (which I hope happens).
Hawthorne, except for football, seems like he's pulling for the other team. I swear he was getting his jollies when Florida would score a run or if they made a great defensive play.
