I tuned into WWL all the way here in S. Florida to pick up the game early on before I made my way to a local sports bar. Was listening to the LSU broadcast and had a hard time with Hawthorne's play by play. On the fake FG by La. Tech, he simply said "they faked the field goal and (player X) runs the ball to the 30 yard line". He paused for a while, leaving me hanging as to whether they made it or not. He finally declared LSU would take over.
same exact play had me yelling at the radio. "ok, the 30.. is that a first down or not jim" he was really freaked out about the clock not working properly
Living in Austin I miss ole Jim! I know some times that he has his brain farts but I wish sometimes that I can tune in 98.1 to hear good ole mister hawthorne!!!! even though he called hunt for the catch for the blue grass miracle I still love to hear Tigers win Tigers winnnnnn!!!!!:geaux:
Yep, after dark in the Austin area. I listened to the whole game last nite. It fades once in a while but usually is pretty clear.
This is an absolute "no win" debate. I am a very good measure to gauge the skill of Hawthorne, because I haven't heard him call a game for a few years. Last night, I tuned in to the radio and got a good taste of Hawthorne. Yes, he is woefully deficient and should be terminated immediately. I recall years past when he was merely bad. At this point in his career, one is barely able to tolerate him. Why did I say that the debate is a no win situation? Because many, many folks "JUST LOVE GOOD OLE MISTER HAWTHORNE . . . . BOY HOWDY I LUVS MISTER HAWTHORNE ON DE RADIO . . . I SHORE DO." We are never going to convince those who are emotionally attached to Hawthorne that Hawthorne needs to retire immediately so that we can get a quality broadcast personality to call LSU games. So . . . we are stuck with Good Ole Mister Hawthorne. LSU! :crystal:
Man, I hate to say it, (and it could be because I don't have much else to compare him to) but I like ole Hawthorne. I'm 44, so I do remember Ferguson, but not real well. I don't have any problem following the game with Jim. And I listen to him while I'm at the game or watching on T.V.
Do you agree that your attachment is based upon emotion, rather than some objective criteria that establishes that he is good at what he does?
Yea, I laugh at him. He is tradition but he is losing it. How long has Jim been doing play by play? I can remember when my dad had no gray hair and would listen to Jim on WWL while in the stadium at the games. My mom would ask him questions and my dad would ack like he couldn't hear her due to his head phones on...lol I was probably 10 and I am now 37, so that guy is burnt out. He is great when they score. He sounds like one of those soccer anouncers. I think he will retire soon. It will be a sad day for LSU football.
