I really think this deserves more internet memes. Ceiling Cat and Sewer Horse might make an appearance.

The NCAA 2007 Divison I Football Records Book can be seen here -- http://www2.ncaa.org/portal/media_a...ations/records_books/fall/football/index.html

On p. 75, under National Poll Champions, it records the following for SEC teams:

    15 - Bama (25, 26, 30, 34, 41, 45, 61, 65, 66, 73, 75, 77, 78, 79, 92)
    8 -- LSU (1908, 1935, 1936, 1958, 1962, 1964, 2003, 2007)
    7 -- Tenn (1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1956, 1967, 1998)
    5 -- Georgia (1927, 1942, 1946, 1968, 1980)
    4 -- Florida (1984, 1985, 1996, 2006)
    4 -- Auburn (1913, 1957, 1983, 1993)
    3 -- Ole Miss (1959, 1960, 1962)
    2 -- Arkansas (1964, 1977)
    1 -- Kentucky (1950)

According to the NCAA record book (see above post for link), USC WAS a consensus champion in 2003. See p. 80-81 under "Consensus National Champions," and you will see LSU and USC were BOTH named the consensus national champion for 2003. It was the first time you had two consensus national champions since Michigan and Nebraska in 1997 and Washington and Miami in 1991.

Note that, like with Consensus All-Americans, the NCAA only recognizes certain major selectors when determining Consensus National Champions, for 2003, these were the:

    AP — Associated Press
FWAA — Football Writers Association of America
NFF — National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame
    USA/ESPN — USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll

NFF and USA/ESPN Coaches Poll gave the 2003 title to LSU, while the AP and FWAA gave the 2003 title to USC.

The only trophy given on the field at the BCS National Championship game is the Coaches Trophy, because the Coaches Poll agrees to automatically vote their #1 in their final poll to the winner of the BCS NC game. In other words, you win the BCS, all you do is win the Coaches Poll.

The purpose of the BCS (like the NCAA record book states) is to cut through all the red-tape of the various Bowl/Conference alliances and match the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a bowl game at the end of the year (instead of all the stupid #1 vs #4, #2 vs #6, #3 vs #5 crap we had in the past). In 2003, the BCS failed, it did not put #1 USC vs #2 LSU. Instead it put #2 LSU vs #3 Oklahoma. The reason was because the computer rankings didn't agree with the human polls that USC and LSU were #1 and #2, and the emphasis given to the computers was so strong that the BCS failed that year at matching the #1 and #2 teams (because of this, the computer rankings were seriously minimized so we don't have such an obvious screw up again).

you can't have 2 consensus champs.

either one or the other has the majority.
LSU being #1 in 9 polls vs. USC #1 in 2 polls should give you some idea who had the MAJORITY that particular season.

    true or false

The ultimate goal for NCAA football teams is the BCS title.

anyone answering false is kidding themselves

What nonsense. You win the BCS championship game and you are the one and only BCS National Champion. Beig number one is some poll, be it the AP or the Opelika Times is meaningless since the advent of the BCS.

The AP poll should never be discussed in the same sentence as some hick poll aub claims. BCS or not...right or wrong, the overwhelming majority of media and fans (except us) will always consider the 2003 championship a spilt. Just like many other national championships have been split over the years. We won the BCS Championship in 2003. USC won what is considered, and always has been considered, a reputable measurement of a college national champion in the AP Poll.

We still have the Crystal but no matter what we say, history will show 2003 as a split in virtually all the record books.

You're right. If you were, your above dig would have been far more subtle. :dis:
