Yeah, but they usually earned a scholarship by then. But Richard Dugas is a walk-on offensive lineman that may start at fullback for LSU at Washington.
Yeah, a lot of the good walkons are local kids who turned down scholarships elsewhere to stay home. :usaflagwa Way back in 1992, a year after our championship season, linebacker John Fiala turned down a scholarship at USC and instead walked on at UW. Fiala had kept his weight down to 190 to wrestle in the state championships and wasn't quite fast enough for the Huskies at that weight. But after the first week of practices, the coaches admitted they had made a recruting mistake. Fiala started all four years, then spent six years with Pittsburgh in the NFL. :usaflagwa In 1996 the Huskies were ravaged by NCAA restictions on scholarships and recruiting visits: 13 (instead of 25) scholarships the year before, 15 the year before that, recruits backing out because of the threat of sanctions the year before that. 8 important walkons, including John Fiala, got significant playing time in 1996 -- and the Huskies went 9-2. :usaflagwa The Huskies have a culture of walkons. They do the best they can on recruiting and view walkons as another avenue for potential players on top of and in addition to recruiting. It's like the NFL and NBA teams who sign undrafted free agents even though they've spent millions on draft analysis. If they made a mistake by missing a player in the draft, so what, just as long as it makes the team better. If you can get a kid with potential to walk on and it turns out that he beats out some scholarship players for time but makes the team better, that's a good thing. :usaflagwa And, if they don't turn out, at the very least they make good practice dummies. :dis: .
I remember the restrictions, but I don't remember them being that severe. Holy cow. I'm not suggesting we abolish the walk-on program. I'm just saying that if you have a walk-on starting, you either offered someone you shouldn't have, didn't offer someone you should have, or both. Or maybe you only have 60 scholarships!
Re: 5 true freshmen will play as well. When Sark took over the cupboard was bare (excepting Locker, of course)
Re: 5 true freshmen A walk-on will start for LSU at fullback and six true freshmen will likely see action in Washington. Whether the cupboard is bare or not, young talent finds its way into the game.
Re: 5 true freshmen Washington could easily end up with a "walk-off" quarterback after Saturday night.
It might also suggest that the guys that were in the position, got hurt, quit, thrown off the team, and quite possible that several disappeared at once. However, he could also be on another type of aid that allowed the staff to pay someone else and still play this guy.:geaux:
