Well, LSU got back mainline power today, so I could finally come to the office to find a phone landline and internet to get connected with FEMA, AllState, State Farm Auto, a roofer, and an electrician.

My old big-tree neighborhood got hit badly, Perkins Road is still closed at Reymond. Hundred Oaks Park lost a bunch of century-old live oaks and many more damaged badly. Someone put up a sign that said Welcome to 25 Oaks.

I lost the nice big ash tree in my front yard and of course it hit my powerline and ripped the electrical service off the side of the house and onto my 2008 Explorer. Then the wind ripped half the shingles off the east side of my house along with some of the old shiplaps. It was pouring rain in my attic and I could see light coming in in 20 places. I had two tarps for emergencies and it was not enough, so I borrowed another and stole a 4th off the bass boat of a neighbor who bugged out. Let his friggin' bass boat get wet! He owes me a half dozen favors anyway. A old college chum and I spent half a day in the rain Tuesday nailing up tarps in between lightning and torrential deluges and stopped the worst torrents. I have 20 buckets, pans, plastic bins, and such in the attic to catch lingering drips.

I still need to get to north Louisiana to see to property up there with trees down, but I'm waiting until gas can be found reliably before getting on the road. They got hit pretty bad up there too.

A total pain in the ass. And now Allstate has a added a big hurricane deductible and I'm going to have to eat the first $4650 of repairs. Plus I'll have to take my vacation leave to get everything done. But it could have been worse, I have neighbors with structural damage, mine is superficial.

Still no power here in Kenilworth neighborhood so I am just stopping by from my brother's office to get my football fix. I went to Entergy today and they said we will have power in 2-3 days. I have a generator but still no Cox service.

Lost some trees here but been helping out my brother who had water damage in Brusly. I swear he is the only one in his neighborhood to lose shingles.

Been housing many family members and chopping up trees. Hope to back on board soon if Cox gets some service in my area.

I am praying for those who have suffered more than I have and wish everyone well in the cleanup and recovery.

I' ll start with the good news and go to the worst.

I am at a coozan's house in Prarieville. I won't have power in my hood for about 3 weeks, but we got off light on the damage side. We had 7 trees down on our property, and three large water oaks in danger of falling. None hit the house, and I really don't know how except for the grace of God and a south east blowing wind. Several houses in my old tree subdivision will be complete tear downs so I feel lucky.

We were also able to get a tree man working the neighborhood in the yard today. He topped one tree, took 2 others down, and grinded the stumps. He gave us a very good price especially for next day service.

We lost about a dozen shingles on the southeast side of the house, but will have that fixed in a day or so.

The bad news is for my family in Houma. My maternal grandmother had a water oak fall through her house and damage. From what I've been told it is like someone took a meat cleaver and carved off that section of the house. An aunt and unvle of mine lost their roof and water inundated their house, so they lost most of everything they own, and the mold is already starting to sprout. Two other uncle had some less serious roof damage.

My parents house was spared any damage, but their fishing camp on Boudreaux Canal is likely gone.

By far the worst news is the passing of my grandmother on Thursday night, but even in that there was a blessing. I got a call from my mom who was evacuated to my sister's in Nashville on Tuesday night that my Grammie was at Our Lady of the Lake, and had gotten dehydrated. Her nursing home evacuated from Houma, and the place they evacuated to in Plaquemine had to be evacuated. We had no idea where my Pawpaw was.

I went to visit Grammie and found her in CICU. I learned that things were far more serious than previously reported. She was nearly dead when she arrived at OLOL, but she was stable when I got there on Tuesday night. When I got there they had no family information, no way to reach my mom or aunt, no idea of her medication schedule, or any info on where my grandfather was. I was able to sort most of that out, and my Mom was able to track down Pawpaw.

I found out Grammie had sepsis(sp), and was in very critical condition. She was on a ventalator and had low blood pressure. I had the priest sent up and he performed the last rights. I sat with Grammie for a few hours and for a few minutes she opened her eyes, and looked at me. I asked her if she knew who I was and she nodded. That's the last response anyone got out of her.

I sat with her for a while on Wednesday, and my parents got in Wednesday night and saw her.

My grammie's other daughter and her husband, from Indiana, booked down. We picked up Pawpaw, who was in an old Winn Dixie that had been turned into a shelter, and let her sit with her for a while. We had the priest up, and he performed the last rites again. We explained to Pawpaw that his wife of 64 years was going to die and that we needed to un-hook the machines keeping her alive. In a rare moment of clarity for his 93 year old mind he said he wanted to do that, and that if he were ever in the same situation he'd want us to unplug him too.

She died about an hour after we un-hoked her with her whole family there. She went peacefull. It is comforting to know that she is in heaven, and she no longer has to suffer the efects of the massive stroke she suffered 7 years ago.

My poor PAwpaw is heartbroken and since last night, it has been a few rare momments that his head isn't in his hands, but at least he is with us and not alone in that shelter, and that he was with grammie in her final moments.

I am sorry for the length in this. God bless all. I hope everyone else made out ok.

Also I intend to get my contributor status back as soon as things are settled.

Prayers to you and yours Supa. I lost my 94 year old Nana during Katrina and have a sense of what your family is going through. I'm glad her husband got to be with her at the end. I will add your family to the prayer list at our church. God bless ya'll.

    Supafan,

Very sorry for your loss. Words can bring no comfort to these situations but I am happy your grandfather was safe, and was with her in the end. It may not seem like it now, but you both gave and received a great gift by being with her in the end. My prayers are with you and your family, until we all come together and share the peace your grandmother is now blessed with.

God bless you and your family, Supa. I know this will be a difficult next few weeks for y'all and especially your Pawpaw. I echo the Dude's sentiments as well. Stay strong and remember the fortune of having your Grammie for the many years she was here. Prayers sent your way.
