I'm a manager at Super1Foods on the Northside of Lafayette. We plan to open Wednesday morning no later than 8am. We have plenty Water and Gatorade. We are supposed to receive a bunch of ice overnight tonight. New Iberia's downtown area and westside got flooded pretty bad. Iberia Parish Sheriff's Dept is still telling people to stay out of town, but I think they will change that "tone" tomorow. Photos of some areas are at www.theadvertiser.com .
In and around Houma including Bourg, Montegut, Coteau and surrounds report minor roof damage, downed fences, poorly structured awnings with no reports of water damage. There is still a ban on returning into some Parish towns as emergency crews and debris removal have to clear the areas. Power is projected to return in 3-4weeks. Cerfew is strict for those remaining even during daytime hours. The first trailer of ice has arrived at the Mathews Wal-Mart, officials said. Other truckloads are bound for that Wal-Mart and the one in Thibodaux. Free tarps will be made available, officials said, but there's been no word on where or when. And a shelter will be opened for residents in Lafourche. The location will be announced Wednesday morning. Lafourche officials are now recommending that all drinking water be boiled for one minute. They say they don't know of any contamination, but are recommending the water be boiled as a precaution.
Terrebonne: No return until Friday. Lafourche uncertain! Most of the homes in Pointe-aux-Chenes have been damaged by wind and Island Road, the lone passage way to Isle de Jean Charles, was still under water Tuesday, fire officials say. After Hurricane Gustav swept through the area, residents and Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies hacked away at limbs blocking Pointe-aux-Chenes Road. Fire officials who made their way into the community Tuesday said Pointe-aux-Chenes Road had flooded up to the 2200 block but couldn’t say whether homes were damaged by water. Spencer Rhodes, chief of the Montegut Volunteer Fire Department, said people have returned to the area despite a 24-hour curfew still in affect for Terrebonne Parish. "The population is growing hourly as people sneak in," he said. Most of their stations in Montegut were damaged, he said. He's waiting to see if waters will recede from Island Road on Wednesday to see how well their fire station on Isle de Jean Charles fared, he said. "We don't know if there's people there or not," he said. "We're going to try again tomorrow."
Albertson’s, with generators at its 2950 College Drive and 9650 Airline Highway stores, led the vanguard of reopening stores Tuesday in Baton Rouge. Winn-Dixie, which had Walker and Prairieville stores open Tuesday, expects to open more today. Wal-Mart hadn’t reopened any Baton Rouge area stores by late Tuesday but expects to open some this week. “We do have some backup power, but we don’t have enough for all of our stores,” said Jennifer Vroman, a Fort Worth spokesman for Alberston’s LLC. Albertson’s will have a third Baton Rouge grocery open today — at 15232 George O’Neal Road — and four Lafayette-area Albertson’s will be open today: 1818 Evangeline Thruway, 4400 Ambassador Caffery, 2863 Ambassador Caffery and 1210 Albertson’s Parkway in Broussard. Winn-Dixie, the Jacksonville, Fla., chain, said Tuesday that five of its 54 Louisiana stores had reopened. In addition to Prairieville and Walker, stores were open in Mandeville and Bogalusa. “We expect to have some more stores open in the Baton Rouge area (today),” Winn-Dixie spokeswoman Robin Miller said. The Baton Rouge distribution center for the chain of more than 220 grocers said, in a recorded message, that its facility had closed for Hurricane Gustav but would begin taking new orders Tuesday night and resume shipping operations late today. Uncertainty has become a way of life for smaller grocers, too. Peter’s Grocery & Market at 1915 Scenic Highway reopened at 9 a.m. Tuesday and planned to open today. The store is running on a generator and waiting to hear from its supplier, Church Point Wholesale Grocery Inc., on the arrival of goods. Miller, the Winn-Dixie spokeswoman, and Albertson’s Vroman said the stores they opened Tuesday were extraordinarily busy. “Our stores in Baton Rouge are packed,” said Vroman, who said there’s more than electricity driving the decisions. “The associates have to go in and assess the product quality because we’re not going to open a store with less than the highest brand of product quality.”
Ascension Parish is looking for volunteers for disaster relief. If you would like to volunteer please visit our Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) located at the YMCA at Lamar Dixon. The VRC will open Wednesday September 3 at 7am or call our help line at 744-HELP (4357). This number will not be activated until Wednesday morning.
Cleco had more than 25,000 Iberia Parish customers without electricity out of 28,500, or 90 percent. In St. Martin Parish 3,200 customers are without power out of 3,800 and 94 percent of Cleco customers are without power in St. Mary Parish, 18,700 out of almost 20,000. Residents can expect a better indication of when they can expect electricity restored as early as Wednesday afternoon a levee built two days ago along the Franklin Canal saved the area from flooding as the canal received a 6- to 8-foot surge from Hurricane Gustav. St. Mary Parish remains at a Tier 1 re-entry and strongly discourages people from returning. He said most of the parish is without electricity and there are sewer and water issues throughout as well. The eastern side of the parish is far worse, with the electricity plant, water plant and steam plant in Morgan City “comlpetely wiped out.” Off shore assessments begin today. They continue to urge residents to wait return in the effort to clear debris from roadways and stage electric repair crews.
Morgan City has issued a Boil Water Advisory effective immediately. This advisory is to remain in effect until cancelled by the city’s water system All Morgan City water customers should boil or disinfect their water before consuming it or using it for food preparation.
