I think the website geeks look at a ton of highlight reels and cherrypicked stats which tell them how good a fellow CAN be. Nobody sends them video of the busted plays or getting their asses whipped or their sorry grades or a bad attitude. The serious scouts and recruiters who sit in the stands, chat with coaches and watch the games have a better idea of who has the stuff . . . and they ain't sharing it with the competition.
If they dont see the field next year would you consider them duds? How is it that Davin Godchaux can just come in and tear it up as a true freshman? Is he just that much of a freak?
I think we've grown accustomed to All American DL. Unfortunately the DL has really suffered since Drake Nevis left. Even Glenn Dorsey, our best DL took until his JR year to really produce. He showed flashes as a Soph, but as a JR he blew up. As I said earlier, the aforementioned should break out this year. If not, then they probably will not.
Ask me when that happens. I don't spend time worrying about imaginary situations. Dude, we got our asses handed to us on the defensive line. They got pushed around all year long. Godchaux came in and did his best but he wasn't ready either. No way was Les going to burn four redshirts and waste a year of these guy's eligibility. He burned one because he had to. Freshmen aren't supposed to be able to start right away. For years they were ineligible to play varsity ball at all. It's still rare for a freshman to come in and compete, especially on the line.
And the redshirts of Teuhuma and Clark were burned. Valentine's would've been too if he were eligible. What was amazing was if you read reports of fall camp leading up to the Wisconsin game, it would lead you to believe that Herron would be a starter and Bain a frequent contributor but that was obviously Les just saying shit for the camera.
So if Bain, Gilmore, and Herron aren't duds presently, isn't it safe to say they are well on their way to becoming such? You just named 2 other true freshmen who contributed along with Godchaux, who beat out guys who were in the system for a year. Doesn't that kind of blow the whole Les' loyalty theory out of the water as well? Not to mention, Quentin Thomas played injured all year, and Christian LaCotoure wasn't exactly blowing the world up.
Wholeheartedly agree. I wouldn't call them duds just yet...but certainly dud-like. That's what troubled me the most...as weak as DT play was for most of the year, those guys must really not be progressing to NEVER see the field. Ego was a late bloomer so it's very practical that someone out of that threesome will blossom late and fluorish. I think we're just used to seeing guys blow it up on the D-line much earlier in their careers. DT's don't usually just come from out of nowhere.
You're right, they were all redshirts. I hope the switch hits and they have the talent they were expected to bring.
Glenn Dorsey didn't start until he was a junior and he became an All-American that year. Some players need more time to develop.
