Here is the deal. You can't get something for nothing.

UPS services about a dozen parishes from their depot in Alexandria. In that area there are over a hundred post offices, from big to tiny. And every time they try to eliminate one, the public screams bloody murder. The Postal service cannot use the UPS/FedEx model because the public demands a full-service post office in every town, village, crossroads, and suburb. And they are willing to pay for it.

The Postal Service is self-sufficient and has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s with the minor exception of subsidies for costs associated with the disabled and overseas voters. It is currently borrowing money from the U.S. Treasury to pay its deficits.

But the Post Office is authorized to raise funds through increased postage to cover its debts. They try really hard not to do this, but from time to time, a postal increase is needed to meet costs. It works the same in private industry. But the Post Office is mandated by the Constitution and the people want a postal system that is a not profit-making business.

Expect first-class postage to go up soon. But it is still a bargain compared to sending a letter through FedEx or UPS.

Well, essentially everything is first-class mail at UPS and FedEx and they do send letters in letter-size envelopes. Their next-day rate is $16.80-31.00 for a letter. Their two-day lowest rate is $10.55 up to 27.00.

Shouldn't you be trying to build a giant robot out of mellow yellow cans and old shopping carts in your back yard?

    Yay, Red can read...... almost.

Doesn't say a damn thing about the GOP, republicans, conservatism.....

You are simply implying by your own opinion two things that are in no way related.

    Nice try though.

the post office is incurring massive debt and is totally unsustainable. again, they only exist because of a government mandated monopoly. they lose billions every year.

    Red,

FedEx and UPS have better rates, whos to say they couldn't do better with at mail system? I go into UPS and FedEx all the time, no lines, no waits. They help with the paperwork. Try this with USPS....

What part of $3.8B loss in 09 and $8.5B in 2010 don't you get, while UPS and FedEx made profits?

In Red's (and the USPS) defense, FedEx and UPS have cherry picked the most profitable parts of shipping. They don't go to addresses to check to see if they are mailing anything. The USPS makes stops at 146 million homes and businesses daily. The USPS has to deliver that first class letter anywhere in the US for the same price. It's competition bases their rates on mileage. Hell, they have to deliver mail by mule in the Grand Canyon for the same rate as across Mandeville.

The post office needs to go to a model more like the competition to compete. If you choose to live out in the boonies, you should pay the cost of mail, or any other service you want, to get to you. My parents live in the country. They still can't get cable. If they want tv, they have to go satellite. If the dudes in the Grand Canyon want their mail, drive to town to get it, or pay what it costs to deliver it to them.
