It's an interesting question posed by Mike Triplett on nola.com.

    http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2012/05/how_much_would_you_offer_new_o.html

    My deal would be:

$140 million for 6 years, a flat $20 million a year with a $20 million signing bonus paid over the first three years and $80 million guaranteed. Years 4-6 would be a TEAM option and if the team picks up the option the contract automatically renews for an additional three years with the salary for years 7-9 being the average of the top 3 QBs and a signing bonus totaling 10% of the value of the extension.

Coupled with the extension would be a Personal Service Agreement that would kick in only if Brees retires as a Saint, never appearing on another team's roster. It would make him a Saints' employee for the rest of his life, pay him 10% less than the GM and be for a 5 year term with automatic renewals. He could be the official tee fetcher, or the official Lombardi Trophy (Trophies?) polisher, or whatever, but he'd have a job for life.

This deal would be the biggest in NFL history (a Brees plus) but wouldn't be the biggest in terms of yearly average (a Saints plus), it would allow the Saints to keep him but avoid another protracted negotiation and it makes Drew a Saint for the rest of his life.

    Win/win?

He was instrumental in bringing the Saints their first and only Super Bowl. He is only the best player to ever wear the black and gold.

So the short answer is: whatever the hell he wants.

Yep, I too would pay him whatever he wanted. He's not an unreasonable guy. He even says (and I believe him) that the amount he's asking for is 'reasonable' for a QB of his stature. One thing is for sure, Mickie Loomis has some 'splanin to do. I wish Deke or Bobby would just ask him, straight up, why they're unwilling to just give him what he wants; especially if it's not over the top amount. And they should not accept the standard 'GM speak' for an answer.

I tell you one this - we can forgive him for the bounties and we'll have his back with ESPN's hack job reporting about the bull$hit listening device, but if he 7ucks up and fails to resign Brees, he better sell his house and get out of dodge as fast as he can because there's gonna be a bulls-eye the size of Alaska on his back.

I would sign the bottom of the check, hand it to him blank and ask him to fill in what he thought was fair...

They have until the middle of June to get it done. I think it'll be a done deal in 2-3 weeks...hopefully.

Funny thing...I follow Jerry Rice on Facebook, my idol as a kid, greatest player in history, even though he beat the saints' ass twice a year. All of the niners fans think Brees is going to San Fransisco since evidently Rice was playing at Brees celebrity golf tournament. The minds of idiot fans, gotta love em.
