I'm not worried about the playbook due to the coaches not wanting to show a look or play, but rather I am worried about Crowton's playcalling. His coaching history speaks for itself. I'm still upset about a number of calls last year, particularly the WR screen to the middle of the sloppiest field I'd ever seen, with no timeouts ( vs Penn St )... I only hope Les takes over the playcalling duties from Gary; if he does, we have a chance.
grrrr the first "bad" post in this thread is, well, a first post. i think the overall "hiding the playbook" thing depends on the team, season and situation. saban, with jimbo, seemed to only show enough offense as was needed and never any more than necessary. 2003 sticks out the most in my mind because he knew he had the defense to able to be conservative offensively. or perhaps it is a ploy to get into your opponents head? i think that if you barely beat a team, but appear to hardly break a sweat doing it, you accomplish at least two things: first, you demoralize your opponent. they're likely out there struggling and they see your team just flat-out beating them into the ground without breaking a sweat. sometimes that is more demoralizing than a blow-out win because the game is so close and your opponent thinks they're in the game when they're really not. it makes them play harder and wears THEM out. secondly, you want to rest your players, if you can, for the long haul. if you feel that you have the team to make a serious run, you are thinking ahead a little bit to conserve your players -- especially running backs. this does nothing for the defense, of course, but the first point that i made is a pretty good way to outsmart your opponent and get into their heads and frustrate them. all of which are great things.
UNC has a great defense so it is unlikely that a very basic package will be successful. But many plays also get installed through the season also. Hopefully this team is comfortable enough by the first game to have multiple tools if/when they need them.
It's a video of me dancing at 80's retro at the the Varsity. j/k - I saw it on the Maxim Magazine site.
How much of the playbook? Hmmm good question. If I remember correctly we still have Crowton as our OC. It could be the same predictable play calling we have seen over the past 2 years, or it could and should be a good solid game plan with a balanced pass and run attack. My guess is we see enough in each game, with a couple of trick plays, to pull off the W, and in the games we don't win it will still be enough, if not almost everything we got, to be very competitive. We have the talent to put it all together, hopefully we will be smart and use that talent to the best of it's ability.I know, something that we haven't seen happening, but a fan can hope can't they.:tigereye: :LSU231: LSU! :geauxtige
No way will we hold back against a team like UNC. We aren't playing ULL or some other such rent a win team.
