JJ didn't see anything open down field. NC dropped the backers to yard stick and covered our wideouts. Samething happened often against Vandy did last year. I'm beginning to believe JJ isn't football smart. His INT and Ball grounding, his reaction were the same. He should have thrown the ball away both times rather than drop looking for someone to come open. He threw off front leg both times, as he wasn't set. Lee must be really bad if we are sticking with JJ.
Out of all the posts that I have read, I must point out 1st that I waited a couple of days before I even looked at the board because I knew what the mentality was going to be, this is the only statement that I can say I agree with 100%. For all the good and all the bad that was for game 1, we simply just don't have enough information to base a sound assessment of this team on. We have a lot of talent to work with and a coaching staff that needs to utilize it. We will see just how this team comes together over the next couple of weeks. Should we eliminate the mental errors, the to's, and keep a killer mentality this team can dominate most, if not all of our opponents. This 1st weekend was not pretty for several teams, especially ones that have been considered coached by some of the best coaches in college football. We were not alone in our issues. No this doesn't excuse us, but at least we were going up against some cupcake team, like UF, OU, UT, OM, and a bunch of others, and look this poorly. We were up against a top 25 team, depleted or not, that has solid talent. Talent that is above what some of these other teams struggled against. This is not to say we don't need to improve, because we do, but rather to point out that it isn't time to jump off the bridge by any means. I'm glad I waited a couple of days to really get into the board, because it gave me time to watch the game a couple of times, and calm down. There were a lot of good things about this game, and a lot of things to be concerned about. The good new is we won, and the things that need correcting, for the most part, can be. The one thing that I noticed, but am not sure if this is something to be concerned about or not, is that GC's offensive scheme is designed for quick strikes and not sustained drives. I went back and watched a couple of games from 2007, 2008, 2009 and noticed the same thing. Our O does best when we strike quick, but struggles when we try to eat up small chunks of yardage and large chunks of the clock. Has anyone else noticed this?
Although you often get on my a$$ for most my posts, I actually agree with you. Like I said, i saw some improvement, but also saw new issues arise. O-Line is getting the push but now we cant hold on to the football. LB's were definitley exposed just as we all thought they would be. However, I see most of our issues as an easy fix.
After re-watching that is one thing I noticed, he is STILL holding the ball TOO long!! On some plays he wasnt even looking down the check down. He wanted to make big plays with his legs......He is no Tyrod Taylor - By The Way, hell of a game last night...eh?
I agree. Good thread. We need more like this. Fans are entitled to be unhappy with their team's performance without poisoning the thread with vitriol.
Think about what you just said. I recall a five yard pass to RR on 3rd and 10. If it's 3rd down, and you need ten yards, why were your two starting receivers only five yards down the field. When RR caught the pass, TT was in the same area underneath the first down. It looked like RR was the check down, but that's a poor play. The check down on 3rd and 10 works when you're stretching the field opening lanes for the check down guy to get the extra yardage. Impossible when the receiver who demands the most attention is not even beyond ten yards downfield. Some of you guys want to be angry. I saw plenty of improvement from JJ. His interception was a mistake that's fixable but he was clearly trying to get it out of bounds. My biggest complaint is the backpeddling. I know you're trying to buy time but if you have to backpeddle the play is dead. Roll out, not back. I'd be interested in seeing what the RBs and WRs are doing when he backpeddles. Are they coming back to him to give him options? Setting up blocking so he can come back forward? If LSU played the whole game like the 1st half we'd be talking about championships. JJ improved. Fix the fumbles and the running game looks much better. Both lines improved but T-Bob is too light in the ass for guard play. O-line was one of NC's strengths and they suffered no suspensions and our D-line performed well against them. The whole team was out of sync in the 2nd half, not just the QB. There was much to be encouraged about folks.
And hopefully we soon get our reminder that JLee is damaged goods so the fans can start encouraging JJ instead of tearing him down even after he's improved. But hopefully it's not because JJ is playing sh**ty.
I did see improvement in Jefferson, but not a step up to a new level of play. His read-and-react instincts are still trailing the action. This should also be fixable, but I'm always scared when Jefferson starts to scramble. He's athletic enough to get back to the LOS frequently, which is good, but he rarely finds a secondary receiver when he backpeddles that far. I agree. No need to take cheap shots at Lee who hasn't even gotten an opportunity yet. Jefferson has no youth excuse this season and stands on his own reputation. He either takes charge and runs an offense better than #112 or not. Thank goodness we have another experienced junior available if he goes down or fails to achieve.
That is the receiver's fault, not JJ. Receiver need to know where the first down is. He needs to camp out near it on third down.
Truthfully, neither of us know that to be true, but TYPICALLY, it's the receivers fault when they're a yard or two shy. It looked like two receivers ran five yard routes which is probably an issue of the playcalling. I wasn't blamind JJ or the receivers. I was blaming the playcalling.
