Essentially, players targeting defenseless players at the shoulder-pad level or above, or leaving their feet to execute a tackle, will be flagged. The tougher penalties come with tougher sanctions: 15 yards and an automatic ejection. Just food for thought. We still have ten days to kill.
How many knees were saved because this rule didn't exist? If I'm a db or LB in today's game, if I can't go high to dislodge the ball, I'm taking your fucking knees out. Ask Dustin Keller how he feels about these rules.
Didn't they still leave the ejection part to the discretion of the referee so they can still give the Gumps of the world some wiggle room?
And what happens if you go for the torso, but the player drops his shoulder? I guess in that case, he wouldn't be defenseless.
I was just thinking about how this might be the end of the "big hit" as we know it. Some of LaRon's "Greatist Hits" (pun intended) involved him launching at his target like friggin Superman.
Be sure to thank Emperor Roger "Helicopter Mom" Goodell and the NFL owners for forcing this on the college game.
