In Div 1-A college football, the answer is 9... SEC 1. Les Miles, LSU 2. Urban Meyer, Florida 3. Phil Fulmer, Tennessee BIG TEN 4. Jim Tressel, OSU 5. Joe Paterno, Penn State BIG 12 6. Mack Brown, Texas 7. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma PAC 10 8. Pete Carroll, USC ACC 9. Bobby Bowden, FSU
Miles beat all these this year plus Saban and Spurrier. throw in tubby who had that golf digest NC 12-0 season and you have 5 1/2 victories over NC coaches.
Of these nine coaches (Miles, Meyer, Fulmer, Tressel, Paterno, Brown, Stoops, Carroll, Bowden), who do you think is the best? How would you rank them? I'll admit if you take everything into consideration, that Tressel (age 55) and Carroll (age 56) are greater so far than Miles (but Miles is still in the early stages of building his program at LSU). But I think Miles is easily greater than Brown (age 56) and Stoops (age 47). As for Miles (age 54) vs. Meyer (age 43), that's a tough one. Both are still in the early stages of building their programs. But back when LSU hired Miles and UF hired Meyer, at that time I thought Miles was the better coach. I wasn't sure if Meyer was a fluke or not. But Meyer has shown that he is for real at UF. As for Fulmer (age 57), he's doing a good job at Tennessee, but nowhere close to Miles and Meyer. As for Paterno (age 81) and Bowden (age 78), their glory years are over. Back when they were at their prime, sure, they were the greatest coaches in college football. But that was in the past. So if I had to rank who is the best right now (considering everything they have done with their programs so far), this would be my ranking: #1 (tie) -- Carroll and Tressel #3 (tie) -- Miles and Meyer #5 -- Stoops #6 (tie) -- Brown and Fulmer #8 (tie) -- Paterno and Bowden
How they rank by the winning percentage of their current programs during their tenure as head coach: WINNING PERCENTAGE 85% -- Les Miles, LSU (2005-2007) 84% -- Pete Carroll, USC (2001-2007) 82% -- Jim Tressel, Ohio State (2001-2007) 80% -- Mack Brown, Texas (1998-2007) 80% -- Bob Stoops, Oklahoma (1999-2007) 79% -- Urban Meyer, Florida (2005-2007) 77% -- Bobby Bowden, FSU (1976-present) 76% -- Phil Fulmer, Tennessee (1992-2007) 75% -- Joe Paterno, Penn State (1966-2007)
