With it looking like LSU will pull in an awesome recruiting class, possibly the best ever at LSU, how does the overall talent of the '09 class compare to previous classes? While we may be bringing in the top talent in THIS YEARS class, how would these players stack up to players of the previous classes? I'm not talking about just LSU recruits here, but about the entire class as a whole. Is this year an up year, or a down year in talent?

Regardless I am excited for the future of LSU football! :geauxtige

    Welcome to the board, dmarzio.

Statistically speaking, it will rank as the best class of all time.

We'll just have to wait and see these guys develop. I think it will be the best ever in terms of production on the field.

So, basically you're telling me that LSU is going to pull one of the best recruiting classes ever from a pool of talent that is top notch?

    .....GEAUX TIGERS! :D

And especially with a top notch defensive coaching staff in place, we're not gonna be wasting all this talent as we did in 08.

The pool of talent on a national level doesn't vary much from year to year - the talent is almost always distributed in a similar way, and the differences are to minimal to notice. Certain years seem to do better with certain positions & areas, but the overall talent level is consistent.

As for how LSU's current class stacks up against our prior ones; this one doesn't have as many question-mark players who may or may not develop, there are more elite-level players, and the character of this class appears to be exceptional as well.

I respectfully disagree, and often think about this...with the age these kids are starting to be pushed towards having a college football career...I see the pool of talent getting larger every year. More and more kids are starting to get personal trainers and coaching before middle school. Wasnt like that when I was that age. Part of the reason I believe we are starting to see more parity throughout college football.

Starting to resemble of kids and baseball in the Dominican or training for the Olympics.

I agree, but on a year-to-year basis, this is not noticeable when you're only looking at 3* quality guys & above.

Your right...year to year its hard to notice....but its getting to the point to where you look back 4-5 years and its freaky different. Kinda makes you wonder when you might start noticing it every year.

Is this class that much better than the 2003 class? There are 3 more 5 star players in this class, but the 2003 class was larger (although not by much), and I think it had more 4 star players. In fact, right now Rival's would have the 2003 class ranked ahead of 2009.

I guess one big difference is that I can't think of a player from the 2003 class that would fall into the Russell Shepard. Another difference is that the lone 5 star from 2003 (Justin Vincent) was actually a carry over from the previous year.

I also can't remember how the 2003 class met LSU's needs compared to how this class will meet the current needs.

I'm curious, so looking forward to your comments.

Well, that class produced 4 first round draft picks, which will be tough to top, but this class could very well do it. That class had a lot of busts in it too, and I'm just not seeing that in this current class. I think this class will be more well rounded.

JaMarcus Russell was probably the biggest pull of that class as far as excitement about a player goes. Obviously, he went #1 overall, but I think fans are more excited about Shep than any other recruit - even Perrilloux.

I really can't remember how the '03 class filled our needs, but this class is doing a pretty good job. It's going to depend on who we end up with though. We'd really like at least one more LB & another DE & Safety.
