A hold that takes place downfield is marked off from the spot of the foul. So if it happens 1 yard ppast the LOS, you end up 2nd and 19.
Instant replay isn't always accurate, but to say it's horrendous is a bit of a stretch. More often than not, they get it right.
Actually, I thought it was a good call. I hated it. But even during live play, I thought he actually (and just barely) broke the plane. And I thought the replay didn't show enough evidence to reverse the call. In other words, if they had called him down on the 1 inch line, I don't think they could've reversed that either. Just an opinion.
Thanks for your opinion. I was really hoping for some good pics. I agree that it could not be reversed, and said so immediately during the game.
I'm a little late on this, but here's a take from someone listening on the radio as I was stuck in a car until halftime. BTW, credit me with our great 2nd half play since I was in my lucky seat at home after halftime. :thumb: Hawthorne gets all excited "Tigers stop him!". Then I hear the crowd roar and he says "touchdown SC but it'll have to be reviewed". I HATE when Hawthorne jumps the gun. He constantly cays "CAUGHT!" then "oh no he dropped it". Dude, just wait a damn second, you're killin me. Both he and Doug Moreau 100% agree that it will be overturned because he was clearly down before the ball crossed the plane. I said to my wife "it'll be confirmed as a touchdown, I guarantee". After reading comments here, the replays must not have been as clear as our radio team indicated.
Yeah, most of the time they get it right. But that isn't the point. My beef with the system is the unnecessary stoppage of play when the call is obvious on the field, or if the call itself doesn't effect the game in any significant way. We see way too many "official reviews" that only take about .5 seconds to look at and deduce whether the call was right or not, but they stop play, interrupt the momentum of a drive and look at it 5 more times, only to decide nothing changed. Or they'll review a 3 yard gain ....it just doesn't matter sometimes. Replay has rendered the officials little spineless robots, who instead of using their eyes to make a call, they say" I'll just go with the flow, try not to blow the whistle and let the booth guys figure it all out later." Reliance on video has begat even worse officiating IMO.
Then you have to make a choice. Would you rather have this, or have a big call in an important game blown knowing that it could have been reviewed and overturned? There's simply no way to remove the human element from the game with instant replay. At the end of the day, human officials have to use their discretion. If there's a called 3-yard gain on 1st and 10 and a stop on 4th and 1, you better believe the difference between a 2 or 3-yard gain matters. They can't really do that because only a set number of certain types of plays are reviewable, despite anything the SEC office says to the contrary. If you expand that number, even more people would complain about more frequent game stoppages.
