http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/09/world/meast/iran-fighter-jets/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 What direction do you think we will go with this?
The Iranian jet was a ground attack plane, the Russian version of the A-10. It carried no air-to-air missiles, only guns and probably never trained in air combat. The guy clearly wasn't worth a damn. Possibly he was going off the reservation because Iran can certainly field better fighter planes than that if they really wanted to down the drone. They still have a few F-14's flying. The Iranian military has little control over The Revolutionary Guard units who makes provocative moves with speedboats in the Straits of Hormuz from time to time. This could be more of the same bluster intended for a domestic audience. The Iranian government itself has little reason to provoke a shooting war with the United States of America. But there are a lot of different factions brewing over there. We will do nothing overtly. It was an Iranian failure and did not kill the drone. It only highlights their ineffectiveness. This actually gives the US an excuse to base more air superiority fighters in the area to protect unmanned reconnaissance aircraft over the Persian Gulf. So far there are no F-22's in the Middle East . . .
