I had lotsa work in Feb & March in Missouri and Michigan and couldn’t get my onions down in time this year ... If you’re in Bogalusa you likely have less sandy loam than I do as you’re closer to the Pearl. I do my 3 varieties an inch deep and 4 inches apart using my “Plumbing Fixture” ... They will not likely be the same you will try to grow ... I get my onion sets in Wiggins not at the Circle T west of Poplarville I normally plant in Feb after a good deep tilling and always build big hills for onions ... Compacted Soil and you’re fucked ... Rule 1 In your case ... double dig with shovel and use lotsa mulch to keep soil loose as deep as u can Grow the variety your local Master Gardener at your feed store tells you to grow ... They’ll have the purple and yellow and white varieties in trash can sized buckets and you’ll scoop and bag your own shit ... White or Yellow Onions are $5 or $6 for a 10-pound sack at Sam’s so lotsa folks say fuck it ... I do organic gardening so it’s all about the time and effort to do it right ... yeah perfectionism
