The problem with this is ... if Hawaii wins they will be undefeated. ESPN is also saying that they should be considered for the number one spot over a 2 loss LSU if we win the BCS championship game. Great. :rolleye33: Go Georgia.
That's just what they do...One day you see Herbie saying that LSU should be there, the next that it doesn't deserve....Herbie and Corso flip flop all the time to keep their material fresh.
Look, guys, to college football fans, the AP #1 is historically the more prestigious #1 in college football. That's because the AP Poll is much, much older than the Coaches Poll. Traditionally, being the AP Poll National Champion was better than being the Coaches Poll National Champion. Another thing you have to understand is that the "crystal" is just the Coaches Poll trophy. That's all it is. The Coaches has given their national champion that exact same crystal ball trophy every year since 1986, long before the BCS was created. When the BCS was created, the Coaches poll agreed to it, the AP, being the more prestigious poll, didn't. With the BCS, the winner of the BCS NC game automatically wins the Coaches Trophy (given right after the game), but not the AP Trophy ("the silver"). Going into bowl season in 2003, both the AP and the Coaches had USC #1, LSU #2, and Oklahoma #3. Unfortunately, the BCS system at the time put too much emphasis on the computers, so we got stuck with a #2 vs. #3 "championship" game, while #1 USC played #4 Michigan. When USC and LSU won, the AP obviously voted USC #1, since that was the team they had #1 going into the game. The Coaches would have obviously voted USC #1 as well, since they had USC #1 going into the game as well, but fortunately for LSU, the Coaches had already agreed to give their trophy to the winner of the BCS game, regardless if that was the team they would have voted #1 or not.
My point is, that if you want to talk about motivation, you can't beat this: If LSU wins on the 7th, we will get both the crystal (Coaches) and the silver (AP). It will be the first time LSU has been undisputed national champions since 1958 (when we were #1 in both the AP and the Coaches).
JohnLSU, I see what you are getting at but the AP trophy meant something before the BCS Championship game was created. Now, IT MEANS NOTHING basically. Players could care less about the AP Poll unless they are on the outside looking in when the BCS Championship teams are announced (like USC a few years ago). And yes, the Coaches Poll may have had a crystal trophy since 1986, but when the BCS Championship Game was created, it became the trophy that EVERY college football player wants to hold. Of course, the crystal football is 10,000 times better looking than the AP trophy as well. So I'm sure that is part of it as well. The biggest difference that you didn't mention is that the crystal is awarded to whoever wins the BCS Championship Game. The AP may be awarded to the team that wins the BCS as well, but there are times when it is given to a team (a few days later too) that didn't play in a game with "national championship" in its title. And since then, to college players and fans, the AP has lost its prestige and luster.
While he did say we won really close games, he did indeed say that we should have lost four more games. I did not imagine that.
