Well, time to shift gears to 2012 recruiting, especially as it appears 2011 is in the books.

Attention shifts to the biggest name on LSU's target list, Riverside's Ricardo Gathers. Where has his head been amidst the crazy post-All-State and into the crazy summer AAU ball schedule? You hear everything from he's still very interested in LSU to the fact that his school lists now do not include LSU b/c he's getting love from other programs.

Needless to say, he's still establishing himself on the summer ball circuit as this interesting "power-swing" player. Too strong for high school kids to handle down low, but yet a project when really put in that 15 feet and beyond, 3 man's game.

I certainly hope that the infatuation with the likes of St. Johns and UConn etc. are to some extent just curiosity and a 17 year old's susceptibility to "the love", but certainly we have to be both realistic in terms of where LSU stands amidst basketball "powerhouses" and in terms of what Trent and Brent can show Gathers.

All this said, LSU's name is appearing on a lot of folks' lists, and as things would tend to shake out of the summer, Trent has shown an ability to hone in on kids that like his approach. Needless to say, it'll be an interesting (and important) summer for the current players and coaches.

TBH I would be disappointed if Gathers went to Syracuse. LSU needs more help in basketball and it will be a lot harder for them to get a player of his caliber(assuming he's as good as he's rated). I'm kind of scared for LSU since Kris Joseph will be graduating and there will be an immediate opening at the SF spot where Gathers would play.

St. John's is a big threat too. Lavin has been almost as good as Calipari recently in recruiting and NYC is a huge selling point. Luckily they don't have the Manhattan apartments to cheat with anymore.

TJ will really have to battle for him.

Since basketball recruiting has now turned its attention to the 2012 class, I will ask this question again... Who would you guys like to see in this 4 man class? We will be losing Garret Green, Chris Bass, Malcolm White and Storm Warren...So Three big guys and a guard... The two for sure I would like to see in an LSU uniform are Robert Upshaw a 6'11 center and Ricardo Gathers who we all know. I'm getting a little nervous about Gathers who I once thought was a lock..there are a lot of rumors floating around that LSU in not even on his list anymore... I once was sold on Javan Felix but i wonder if it would be bad to have 3 pg's under six foot on the roster...I wouldn't mind pulling in J-Mychal Reese who is said to be a pg/sg...Well just wondering what you guys think!

I think the center and small forward positions are where we need the most help. Point guard we will be set with Hickey and Stringer. Shooting guard is set with Derenbecker and Turner. PF is set with O Bryant. Center will have an immediate opening, and we don't have a true SF on the team.

Ideally I think we need 2 players at each position. One SF that has a jump shot and 3 point range, and another that has size, speed, and good rebounding skills. For the center position, we will need a tall defender/rebounder, but we might be able to get away with centers that are still a project on offense. It may be better to take a chance on some 2 or 3 star centers that have the size and hustle but not the fine tuning.

Too bad ADs and coaches can't trade for players (with players' permission) like in the NBA. The only drawback would be credits transferring.

Poor Andrew Hatch , the LSU QB who transferred to Harvard...(I don't think many of his credits transferred with him).

None of the credits transferred but he was taking his time with school anyway given he went to Harvard then went on a 2 year mission before arriving at LSU. When he went back to Harvard he was considered a Sophomore who technically took a leave of absence. We may see him as a coach one day.

Don't we have that transfer becoming eligible from Iowa State (or some school like that)? With him and MWhite, we should be much improved at center. Obviously, not sure how good he is or will be. SF can be filled fairly easily, I would think. The lineup you give looks pretty good on paper, lol.

Yea I kinda forgot about him. I don't know how good he will be. His stats at Iowa State were decent for being on a crappy team. I haven't ever seen him play so I'm not sure how much of a factor he will be. He would be a senior when the 2012 class is incoming. I'm not sure if TJ is loyal to seniors, or would rather get the young players experience quickly. I guess it depends on what player it is.

Either way, we definitely need two because after Hamilton is gone we wouldn't have any centers left. Malcolm White only has 1 year left.

I tend to come from the Syracuse line of thought that the small forward is the best position on the floor. If they are a true SF they generally have the speed of a guard with the size to be a 5RPG+ player. When they have an inside/outside game they create matchup problems.

They have the versatility that they can sometimes be used along side another, where no other position is equipped to do so. Centers are too slow to have 2 on the floor at the same time. PG's are generally too short and don't have good enough shots to play 2 at a time. SG's are the opposite and need more shots so if 2 are on the floor at the same time there won't be enough shots to go around and it's like playing 5-4. I think that's what we saw this last year. We don't have a SF that can rebound and have a mid-range game. Turner could shoot but teams knew he didn't have much of an inside game so they tightened up on him a lot. Same with Derenbecker, although he improved big time from the beginning of the year til the end.

I'm not sure what TJ's philosophy is just yet. If you watch a lot, you can kinda tell what established teams like. Duke is a point guard team, while UConn is a center team.

anybody think we have a realistic chance at Devonta Pollard from east-central Mississippi? both scout and rivals have him a Top 5 small forward, and he has an offer from LSU. Both Alabama and Miss State are located very close to his hometown, and they have both offered him. and he's being recruited by elite programs like Kentucky and Georgetown... but if we have a gaping hole on our team available for a small forward right away, plus a coach who apparently hits it off well with recruits and their families, wouldn't that give us decent odds?
