Hmmm... if you listen to the Trent press conference today, clearly, they have their priorities on the backcourt. And "one or two" guards ("juco" or "high school") could fit the bill now that Dotson and Populist are leaving the team. I like this kids offer list. Some serious basketball schools have offered, Cincy, Texas Tech (Billy G), Tennessee, Nebraska. Others like Butler may be waiting in the wings. Oddly a lot of the same schools that have also offered Dylan Talley. We have got to get someone, and now there is some serious PT that's opening up at LSU. He does tell Rivals that LSU could be "top of his list for a visit", so Trent is definitely out there. http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1208845 FWIW, even if you don't think it's the best tape, what's clear is that this kid has good hands and can fly. He can definitely speed up the tempo if you put him out there, and the question is can he use that speed to defend at the point of attack. Seems like he'd be an upgrade on physical talent over a kid like Pop. Let's wait and see.
For those that need a serious Dylan Talley info fix, he makes his way to Nebraska this weekend for his visit. The Rivals' Husker site reports... Huskeronline.com - Texas juco guard Talley set to visit NU this weekend Still liking this. He just needs to visit Baton Rouge to get a comparison point. I'm a little bummed that he couldn't do this this weekend during the Spring game, but seriously, he needs to look at the new practice facility and talk to the players. How many guys has Sadler/Nebraska put into the pros? Does he need to give Marcus Thornton a ring? All I can say is next weekend, let's roll out the red carpet. That said, the one thing I've appreciated with Trent is his almost "laid back" recruiting style. He's not going to come at you super hard, b/c his attitude is that you've got to want to be at LSU for the right reasons too. But, he always seems to be prepared. Too often Brady's recruiting style was hit or miss (the DJ Augustin, Tweety Carter year was a perfect example). I like Talley a lot, but there's Grooms and Hickey too. Frankly, I'd take Talley/Grooms as the JUCO and Hickey as the FROSH that you develop. You've got your big do it all guard in Talley, and you've got your really quick PG in Hickey. Talley will fit in real well in Tigertown... Nebraska is always going to be a Big 12 also ran.
I like the fact that hes' visiting them first...It will give Trent a chance to clean up whatever Bo Spencer says cause I get the feeling he's not going to say to many positive things about LSU Plus he's got see A. Dotson leaving (not that im happy about him leaving, I think in a few years Dotson going to be a real player) as an opportunity to slide right in and get some good minutes
Ok, so for all of the objective hoops nuts out there, with Dylan Talley coming in next weekend on a confirmed LSU visit let me ask those arm chair recruiters out there, is Dylan Talley our man? Is he also going to quiet down some of the critics out there who are quick to get down on Trent's recruiting? Folks have been so quick to point out the "bad recruiting" that Trent has done, during the past two years, but when Aaron Dotson was recruited, he was a top 100 Rivals guy, with offers from Louisville and other schools. Can anyone tell me the last rivals 100 LSU signed at the SG position prior to Dotson? Afterall, when we signed Andre Stringer, here was a guy who had boasted several SEC offers, and was a top Rivals 150 guy (again, anyone care to point to the last Rivals top 100 PG LSU has signed prior to Stringer?). So now, you've got Dylan Talley, a guy rated as a top 25 JUCO, with offers from Gonzaga, LSU, Nebraska, as well as reported offers from the likes of Tennessee and USC. He was also recently named as a JUCO honorable mention All-American. What's the call? Both have LSU offers, according to Rivals.:geauxtige
TGer'nHornland, a lot of those LSU basketball critics and Trent Johnson second guessers don't really know the game, they do know W-L records though...I think. These are generally the same fans that were calling for Miles head when he was 7-0 because, although he was undefeated, he didn't give them the "Warm Fuzzies" because of the way he won all the close games, because of the way he spoke at press conferences, and because of the Ole Miss game 3 years ago. LSU hoops fans do get the concept of fandom...that Fans support the team and the team doesn't exist to make the fans feel better about themselves. That's a real good subtle challenge you threw out there and it will reveal a lot of character in those who respond. As for sticking my own neck out...I have no clue...I don't know the game myself that well, but I do trust in coach Trent Johnson's ability to recruit the right person and turn things around. :bball:
I agree with Steve 100%...A lot of the armchair recruiters have no idea about the nuts and bolts of basketball and only look at wins and loses! With that being said I hope Tally gets a warm welcome from Tiger Nations next week... After visiting NU he said that they are now his front runner! Huskeronline.com - Huskers make good impression on juco recruits
Absolutely. That's exactly why I asked the question. Because believe it or not, many times, even great coaches with an eye for talent, get it wrong. Recruiting can be a difficult game. I particularly hate, though, those really vocal "board" chastisers who now pile on and take out their frustrations on kids like Eddie Ludwig, Aaron Dotson, when probably when they were recruited, they had nothing but good things to say. Or, these were the same folks calling for LSU to give an offer to say, Brian Williams (out of Glen Oaks), over Ralston Turner, who took a schollie to Oklahoma State, but sat out an entire year due to injuries. What you can say is that Trent has shown a willingness to go out there and compete for recruits and he's slowly building the talent base back up at LSU. 2010 was a class that LSU could build on, and 2011 hopefully will continue that building. That's also why now, I want folks to all get their two cents in, especially those who know so much about what LSU needs. Is Talley what they're looking for, Sam Grooms, or Anthony Hickey? Do they roll the dice on a LA kid like Nick Syrie or is that just not good enough? As for Talley, I do like him and his profile and body of work, and frankly I find it funny that he's really considering Nebraska and LSU. Ironic b/c Bo Spencer is there after being unable to take advantages laid out for him at LSU. And, ironic, b/c of some of his quotes... Talley said the two biggest topics during his visit were Nebraska's strong academic support system for student-athletes and how he would fit in with the Huskers should he decide to play for NU. "They just explained to me about their academics and stuff like that, how they're going to give me tutors and everything I need to be successful in the classroom," Talley said. Ironic, b/c of course, Bo Spencer couldn't get his stuff in order at LSU with all of the academic support that LSU has to offer (which is undoubtedly more impressive that Nebraska's), and he apparently hasn't had that easy of a time at NU. Second it certainly appears that NU wants to have Talley play off guard, they're recruiting another JUCO to play point, and they have another JUCO kid, a 25 year old, coming in for a visit next weekend. I understand why a kid would, leaving a visit, say that that school's on top. But, things can also change quickly. Talley will have a much better team to play on to showcase his talent at LSU. Turner and him could team up in the backcourt, or add Stringer at point and he plays the 2. The main point is that he is instantly one of the more experienced guards in a guard rotation that this pretty thin.... Bass, Stringer, Turner (who could play 3), and John Isaac. He also will have the services of one of the better front courts in the SEC. I hope that once he visits LSU, he'll realize that he can play a bigger role for a team with more promise. A school with far greater Hoops tradition and NBA almuni. I'm sure he could ask Justin Hamilton what it's like to be at a bottom feeding Big 12 school (see Iowa State). A line by line coach's comparison isn't even close. Sadler's never sent anyone to the NBA, he's never had his Nebraska team in the top half of the Big 12, going on his seventh year. It's a little unfortunate that after a SEC championship, Trent has to defend himself after his third year, but hopefully, some sense of basketball reason will prevail here. :thumb: I do need to report, though, that visits and commitments are tightening up. Lon Kruger, new to Oklahoma, wasted no time in getting a commitment out of Sam Grooms, the other 6'1" JUCO point guard LSU was looking at in Florida (never though offered by LSU). That leaves only Anthony Hickey Jr., a good, but less experienced FR looking at the Tigers, with a Trent offer. For the arm chair recruiters, do you line up Hickey for a visit the next weekend?
I wonder, if we pick up Tally do we still have to get another PG? We are picking up Tally to play PG and we also got JI who is a combo guy... I think people are sleeping on JI... I guess it would be nice to pick up a pure point but I just don't think its a must...Now if we do pick up Hickey im not going to cry, one thing I did notice in his highlights was his D up top!
