sounds like trent was planning on using bo at point. because he said "On how Farrer’s injury affects combinations ... “The only real difference is that I’ll have to use Chris (Bass) and Bo (Spencer) together at times, " i interpret this as saying he was going to play bo at 1 and alex at 2 a lot with bass and dotson as backups. i had thought it was going to be bass and bo at 1 and 2 with alex getting time and 2 and 3. wonder if a medical redshirt is being considered. being out 6 wks basically means he wont be on top of his game til the 2nd half of SEC play at best. he should stick around and get his mba.
You are right. Farrer was going to get a lot of PT at 2, and was likely going to start. It seems like Trent was pretty concerned with bringing Dotson along slowly because he's been described as probably stilll being only about 70%. And, Farrer while not exciting as a 2, had experience and made solid decisions with the ball. With Bo's experience, he would have the most familiarity at the 1. But, you've got to look at Bass and Bo at the 1 and 2, b/c they are healthy and Bass is a returning player with experience. It also creates interesting matchups as a backcourt that can push the tempo faster and gives Bo more freedom to become a scorer. Trent acknowledged that this was a line up that would get more play now as well, so we'll see what gels down the road. In any case, as we know, injuries can very quickly change the dynamic of a team. We saw in the prior regime where an injury to a key player decimated Brady's chances and he was slow to adjust. I'm very curious to see what Trent can do this year with an undermanned team. I honestly don't know if Farrer will come back after this season. I think he's more or less already done with his college classes. If he comes back in 6 weeks, he'll be back in time for SEC play, but rusty. I don't think he'll medical redshirt b/c didn't he already eat up some of his redshirt time? With Dotson better and Ralston Turner coming in next year, I'm not sure that he's going to get the same opportunities he would have this year, next year. He could get a masters or whatever like Temple, but I'm not sure he's doing it for hoops. Despite everything you say about Farrer and what kind of hoops player he is, it's really a sad thing having this injury in his senior season after so many years on this team. I hope he has a speedy recovery and that he can play in the back half of the season and the fans honor him for his time.
Not to completely get away from the recruiting side of this thread, TB puts out the following article about Eric Buckner, the 6-10 JUCO PF/C still out there... http://lsu.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1015035 Buckner is an intriguing prospect, but is he really the best JUCO prospect out there for us down low? Clearly Trent sees something in him to give him the offer, but the kid only averaged 6+ ppg and 5+ rpg last year. He's supposed to be pretty athletic, although thin (seems like a recurring theme with LSU big men of late)--his school now "officially" lists him at 6-10 and 215. Rivals lists only offers from GA St and LSU although he claims schools like Alabama, Auburn, St Johns among others are interested. The good news is that basketball is starting everywhere including the JUCO ranks, and it seems at least that Eric Buckner may be a centerpiece in what his team is trying to do. He's actually on a JUCO team down in FL where most of his teammates will sign with Div-1 programs. I hope the kid blossoms during the year and we can all see what kind of post player he can be. He seems to be doing alright so far.... http://www.newsherald.com/sports/see-78853-seek-city.html http://www.newsherald.com/sports/schools-78333-basketballers-city.html http://www.newsherald.com/sports/seven-79043-basketballers-sign.html http://www.newsherald.com/sports/season-78891-basketball-teams.html http://www.newsherald.com/sports/basketball-78896-marianna-move.html
Saw this tidbit in a Alabama news article on Ralston Turner. Just seems like a good kid, and a "Trent Johnson" kind of kid. I think folks are going to be really happy with this 2010 class for the years to come... And away they go | TimesDaily.com | The Times Daily | Florence, AL Big games a coming in the coming week.
Nice piece on Turner there. Here's a news clip on Stringer. The first in-game shot at :16 has me absolutely pumped to watch this kid play next year. YouTube - ANDRE STRINGER LSU BOUND BEST PLAYER IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI
SWEEEEET! Finally some youtube video on the kid besides his 6 second pass. The kid has definitely got a stroke.
Word on the street is that Gottfried's staff rubbed Turner the wrong way. When Grant came in, Bama was behind, and Grant's staff didn't really go out of their way to try to get back into the game. They also then started recruiting several other SGs. He had a relationship with one of the older 'Bama assistants who left and ended up at UGA, so they were also on him. But, in the end, Trent came in relatively early (last year) and then stayed on him.
I'm glad ESPN posted a new video for Turner. I have been saying the whole time rivals was really missing the boat on him. Just goes to show you that everything is political and everyone has personal agendas even in something as small as high school basketball, although some of us take it much more serious than most. Congrats to the coaches for signing a really good class and a class that might be considered a top 5-10 class a few years down the road. LSU basketball is in great hands with CTJ and staff and I have no doubt the program will be a top 10 national program to stay in a few short years.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. If you watched the LSU v UConn game tonight, we definitely could have used Turner's shooting... or any of the 2010 class for that matter. :hihi: ESPN must be getting around to finally putting film up on the ESPN100 prospects. They've now got the video of Andre Stringer at the King City Classic. Andre Stringer - College Basketball Recruiting 2010 - ESPN Stringer is definitely small, but boy the kid has a nice quick shot. Supposedly at one point at this tourney he was 100% from 3 point land on several shots. I think next year's team should be very fun to watch. When you watch the team this year, you really forget that we've got a kid in Malcolm White that just can't be out there. We could have used him tonight too. LSU is definitely though is in need of an impact big man recruit. When I look at the top teams like UConn, Kansas, Kentucky, there is the balance of the post and guard play. No offense to Green, Harris, Warren and Ludwig, but they are all players that have to develop over time (I am actually pretty impressed with what Storm could be, if he just learns to play a little smarter, and Harris could be interesting IF he could ever gain some weight). LSU could really use a 6'9"-6'10" sort of 220ish big man that can run in transition, hit a jumper, but then hit the glass and play down low. For example, Stanley Robinson of Uconn killed us tonight. White is more of a classic lowpost PF, and this has to be the goal of Trent's recruiting efforts for the Spring or 2011. I have to think that having another big man to groom, considering that Green, Warren and White will all be Juniors, is important. Ludwig and Courtney feel like a little bit undersized power forwards to me. Eric Buckner, Antonio Cooper and Kervin Bristol continue to be the JuCo names that are surfacing. Interestingly, Buckner is a top 10 JUCO recruit according to JucoJunction.com, and Bristol is a top 70 guy. Buckner looks interesting but hard to tell what kind of impact he'd have http://jucojunction.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=2526
