Believe it or not, we're already approaching summer high school ball, and recruiting is in high gear. Again, with LSU hauling in 6 recruits this year, it remains to be seen how active Brady et. al. will be this summer and fall. They've got 2 or so schollies to give at this point, it seems.

First and foremost, Greg Monroe appears to continue to play the field. Now Billy Gillipsie is getting in on the action. Ugh. He's apparently working the recruiting with a passion... you'll see a recurring theme here.

Second, I remain curious as to why we did not talk to Hank Thorns. I know we signed Spencer. But, guess who called Thorns recently? Billy G.

Recent Rivals article on Terrance Henry says that we've dropped a lot on his list and that we used to be the frontrunner. I'm crushed; really wanted this guy.

Well, it's not in the bag yet. According to the Advocate today, Wright is still contemplating his choice and it certainly doesn't look like a done deal. The deadline for other signings is May 16th, and according to this article a few things come to light.

First, as I surmised, we have very few schollies in '07 and '08 to go after folks. We've had a schollie open for Greg Monroe, but that's almost by necessity, even though the kid is flirting with every big name out there.

Second, it appears that LSU has in fact backed off James Tyler, after his being kicked out of Patterson. That means another spot. So, if we lose Wright, Brady's got the choice of going after a signee before the May 16th deadline, or perhaps holding it for 2008. I'm inclined to keep that spot open for next year, just to balance things out a little from class to class, but you wonder who he might have in his sights.

Third, it looks like despite what Brady said a few weeks ago about "taking his time" with filling Coach Johnson's spot, it looks like demand for the position has been "surprising." I'd say this hire is a pretty key hire. Not b/c the staff is hurting or anything, but one, this is primarily a recruiting role, and two, it's a chance to bring new life to this staff in the coaching department. It sounds like again, there's been a lot of "activity" in the background, which hasn't necessarily been followed. I'd love to see a young kid with good Southern ties, who might have done a stint in the NBA, or another cerebral young coach who can bring some offensive ideas to the table.

Truth of the matter is that this staff is focused on '09, where over six spots come available.

Again, should be an interesting summer...

:geauxtige :bball: :champs: LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. BE A FAN.

"Senior point guard Hank Thorns of Las Vegas is being grossly under-recruited. The 5-foot-9 speedster played like a high-major prospect against Boo Williams. He nearly led his Las Vegas Dog Catchers to an upset win. Thorns scored 30 points on whirling drives to the basket and deep 3-pointers. He was the unquestioned leader on his team. His on-the-ball defense was also impressive.

Having fully qualified, Thorns said he recently fielded a call from Kentucky but only has an offer from New Hampshire. UNLV wants him to prep, and Brewster and Findlay are possible destinations if the right offer doesn't arrive."

sounds like a guy we should (if a Wright does'nt come) or should have taken a chance on!

Yeah, I really wanted Thorns over Bo Spencer, but I'll take Bo.

Thorns can score, shoot, and though only 5-10, he can defend and rebound (12 rpg!).

Someone on the Rant claims that DJ Wright has officially left LSU.

    Hank Thorns!

Confirmed by the Advocate as well...

Probably true, DJ would have a hard time getting PT right away, but you hate to see a 60+% 3 point shooter... What it does is allow LSU to go after more LA players this next year, which is a good thing given the crop coming up.
