yep, the high school coaches know him well. that would explain why the recruits from AL don't come to LSU.
Well, our season's officially over (men's anyway), so there's not much left to discuss but whether Big Baby comes back, recruiting, and what the hell Brady and coaching staff will do for an encore. We might as well start watching recruiting (that's one glimmer of hope anyway, right). So, Artichokes posted on the 06-07 thread about Terrance Henry a 6'9" LA forward, who's watching LSU highly. That's good. I hope the staff makes this kid feel good about his homestate school. There are several forwards that consider a very hard look, besides one named Greg Monroe, and I'd like to see LSU getting back to wrapping up solid kids from the state. Another LA kid that has a LSU offer according to Rivals: Brandon Wilson, a 6-5 SF from Rayville, LA. Just to refresh everyone's memory, here are the kids in the 07-08 class that have offers: James Tyler (verbal)(C) Greg Monroe (PF) Terrance Henry (PF) Ray Shipman (SG) Willie Warren (SG) Olu Ashoalu (SF) Brandon Wilson (SF) It's likely that this is watch list going into the summer and summer camps. :geauxtige :bball: :geauxtige
For what it's worth, and it's good discussion fodder, found this blog of Coach Eldon Pipes, an AAU coach in NE LA... talks about the best kids in LA for '08 as well as '09. Obviously, LSU is in on several of these kids, but to me, why aren't they recruiting more of the guards? Sound like a recurring theme? :dis: It appears that Davarius Dunn, which I find curiously ranked HIGHER than Mr. Monroe by this observer, does not list LSU--he's the brother of LaceDarius Dunn who was the best guard in the state this year, who is another guard to leave the state. Not sure if LSU can even get in on the second Dunn. It appears that Brandon Wilson, however, can play some guard and has a LSU offer. Coach Pipes ranks the recruits Hello, This is Coach Eldon Pipes and welcome to my blog "Coach Pipes's Full Court Press." I welcome you to respond with your opinion. LOUISIANA TOP 10 IN THE CLASS OF 2008 (REVISED) 1 Davarius Dunn, 5-10 (G) Excelsior Christian School (Monroe, La.) 2 Greg Monroe, 6-10 (F) Helen Cox High School (New Orleans, La.) 3 Terrance Henry Carroll 6-9 (F) Carroll High School (Monroe, La ) 4. Brandon Wilson 6-5 (G) Rayville High School (Rayville, La.) 5. Storm Warren – 6-7 (F) Richwood High School (Richwood, La.) 6. Tydrick King - 6-4 (G) West Monroe High School (West Monroe, La) 7. Desmond King – 6-5 Peabody Magnet School (Alexandria, La.) 8. Brian Purvis – 6-5 (G) Excelsior Christian School (Monroe, La.) 9. Brandon Moore – 6-8 (F) Holy Cross Academy (New Orleans, La.) 10. Deshawn Patterson – Vandebilt Catholic High (Houma, La.) Louisiana Elite Eight for the class of 2009 1. Kourtney Robinson, Arcadia High School, 6-8 Kortney is 6-8, tweener. Has not developed the post moves to score in the paint and does not handle the ball well enough to be a really good guard, but he can defend anyone at any position. He has a really nice jump shot and he is one of the best passers I’ve seen. He also needs to be taught how to play the game. Plays a lot like Gani Lawal. He is a great athlete, very long, quick Has good hands and will probably grow another two or three inches. Because of his upside he gets the nod for No. 1 in the class of 2009 2. Karlos Gary, Sicily Island High School,6-0 Karlos is a super athlete, probably the best that I've seen in any class. He can shoot the three and short jumper consistently, plays great defense and can score from any position on the court. The most exciting dunker I've seen this year. Has unbelievable hops. He needs to be more consistent offensively and needs to be taught how to play the game. His game is almost identical to Senario Hilman. (If he was 6-3 he would get the No. 1 spot.) 3. Kendrick Washington 6-6 240 (PF) Huntington High School Kendrick is 6-6 and weighs 240 lbs. He has great hands and great feet. He moves really well and passes the ball like a guard. He really reminds me of Pattrick Patterson (two years ago) Very Active on offense and defence. Not really able to score in the post outside of tip-ins and put backs. However he will probably grow at least a couple more inches and has the potential to be one of the top twenty post players in the country. 4. Ricky Johnson – Carencro High School 6-1Ricky is probably the most complete athlete in the 2009 class. He shoots well, handles the ball well and plays good defense. He has a very high basketball IQ and is able to adapt his game in order to provide what he believes his team needs. He plays well under pressure, has the game maturity of a senior and can make big shots in the clutch. He has a lot of natural instincts and a good feel for the game but still needs to develop a better understanding of how to provide what the team needs without him actually doing everything. 5. Raymone Andrews St Thomas Aquinas 6-3Raymone is probably the smartest guard in this class. Has great natural instincts and he knows how to play the game. Puts you in the mind frame of a younger and much shorter “Magic Johnson. He is also very athletic but he needs to drastically improve his skills. He has great point guard instincts but average skills. Not really a good ball handler or a good shooter. If his skills matched his instincts, he would be the best in the state. 6. Brandon Mitchell, Amite High School 6-3 Brandon is very long and very athletic. A super offensive player who has great potential. He can score a lot of points and is exciting to watch. Not really a good ball handler but he uses his athleticism to compensate for skills. He could be very good but still has a little ways to go. 7. Davion Spivey, Ruston High School, 6-2 Davion is a super athlete who already has a college body. Very quick, good ball handler and good shooter. He has good enough skills to play any guard position but he is not great at anything yet. He is only 15 and will not be 16 until August. He’s constantly improving in every area and will definitely be a HM D-1 prospect. 8. Charles Winborne, Loyola Prep, 6-2 Charles is an offensive machine. He shoots the ball well, handles the ball well and one of the few guys in the state that really knows how to create space and take you off the dribble. He is a very heady guard and can help his team at a number of positions. Needs to work on his defense. --Eldon Pipes coaches AAU basketball, notably handling "Dream Team Louisiana." He's also a regular in the stands at local gyms, watching high school hoops.
Not speaking for Brady et. al., but (1) he thought Tack would be here next year, (2) he's gotten a verbal for '09 from a very good PG from Houston, Tommy Mason-Griffin, and (3) if he signs anyone, he needs him sooner. Hence, he's after Donnell Beverly (6'4" 3-star, true point in CA) and/or Marcus Thornton (Juco combo guard from TX, rated by most Juco rags as a top 15 guy). I think we fail to sign either Beverly or Thornton, we could see some "sleeper" PG kids get put on the radar in '08... hopefully . But, if you have a '08 PG signing, the kid's not here until Temple's a senior, and presumably, you've had another year of Temple playing the point (which may not be a bad thing if he improves), and he's a freshman waiting for TMG to come in behind him. I don't know if that's a tough sell or not. It's insurance in case TMG doesn't come, but I don't know what kind of message that sends to him. Regardless, Brady has to start recruiting and signing some point guards.
Well, as the Tigers make a late season push for guards in this Spring signing period, we've been focusing on Marcus Thornton and perhaps a point guard signing (we hope). What does that mean for '08? Well, potentially one less schollie to use. We've got several big targets out there, but landscape continues to shift. We know we have James Tyler committed. But, where do others stand? We lost some ground with Willie Warren, who seem to be high on Arkansas, Kansas, Texas and Texas A&M ( http://lsu.rivals.com/content.asp?cid=658703). And, Greg Monroe continues to talk to everyone who will throw a schollie at him. Recently Rivals also says that Kansas is now recruiting Greg hard. What does Greg have to say about Kansas? ... is Kansas an option for the talented power forward prospect? "Oh yes, Kansas is still very much in the mix," said Monroe. "Kansas is still very much an option for me. I love the atmosphere at the games and it's a big basketball town. The fans are great and Kansas is a basketball town. "Kansas is probably the best school when it comes to the fan base," he added. "I don't have any leaders or favorites, but Kansas is definitely an option for me." Who says that the fans and atmosphere don't sell a school? Especially when arguably, Kansas' coach ain't all that great and doesn't do enough with the talent. What's interesting is that in '09, when LSU will have a ton of schollies to dole out, LSU is on the lists of several big names--not only having a commitment from Tommy Mason Griffin, but a few five star guards and big men. There clearly is recruiting momentum... the key is can we convert? :geauxtige :bball: :champs: LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. BE A FAN.
