It doesn't look good for Gonzalez. Again, the case of too little too late. Brady and Butch need to identify these guys early and prioritize them like they do the Garrett Greens of the world...

Note the following, let's get a guy on our staff who has some NBA experience, maybe played point, please... perhaps Randy Livingston? (I know, I know, I make that pitch every year  ).

While I'd love to agree with you Deek, I think with what's coming back, this team needs good guards, period. I think what you're advocating is get a 1 no matter what. That would leave me to believe that you'd go after a Bo Spencer, Josh White or Warren Fuselier and sign them (for those who read the entire thread, some of the best unsigned LA point guards left on the board. I think that Bo and Warren would be more interested in LSU than perhaps Josh, but Josh sounds like a guy we could use for his quickness)? Because, honestly, there aren't that many great PGs left in the south.

You take them over an all-JUCO kid like Marcus Thornton who's from Baton Rouge and at a quick 6-3 can guard SEC guards, score and bring up the ball some of the time to help G.Temple? I'd personally love to have M.T., but I'd probably roll the dice on one of the LA guys too--just for the sake of getting back to LA again.

At this point, I'd be happy with either.

:geauxtige :bball: :champs: LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. PACK THE PMAC AND KEEP THE FAITH.

Assuming Randolph is the real deal, we need a distributor at the 1 to feed him and Tas. (I'm assuming the Big Baby situation will cause him to go to the NBA come hell or high water). Otherwise it's same old story, Morning Glory.

Umm.... Marcus Thornton is a PG. He's just playing SG in JUCO.

He was a Baton Rouge all-region point guard.

'Chokes, you just made me feel a whole lot better... although I can't find alot on his point guard skills. In any case, Thornton would not be a bad pick up IMO. First, he's a solid JUCO guy from decent JUCO program. Second, he can score, always has been able to even in high school at Tara. Third, he's a Baton Rouge kid, and I really think we have to shore up our LA rep. Fourth, if he can play point, he's exactly the kind of multidimensional guard we've been lacking. Here are probably some things about Marcus folks didn't know or forgot...

He was a second team 5-A All Stater... same year that Tas' was a first team all-stater.... and a first team All 4-5A district.

Back in July of 2004, Hoop Scoop had this to say about Marcus after a summer tourney game...

We also were impressed by the Houston Superstars, which knocked off Seattle Rotary Select in a 88-85 overtime game and featured 6'0 Brandon Johnson from Sugar Land (Willowridge) TX and 6'3 Marcus Thornton from Baton Rouge (H.S.) LA, who combined for 55 points. .... And Thornton, who makes more than his share of tough shots and uses his big time athleticism to get to the hole, is getting no interest from any colleges at all, which means he has to be one of the biggest sleepers in the nation, as he can play at the mid-major level or higher and is legitimately belongs in the top 100-300 range nationally.

Hard to explain, but that may be why he went JUCO route. From what I can tell in his stats, it seems like he's more of a slashing SG who is aggressive and takes the ball to the hole. Not a whole lot of assists, but high energy guy who shoots a high FT% and gets steals.

MARCUS COME HOME!!! WE NEED YOU!!!

:geauxtige :bball: :champs: BTW, CONGRATS ON THE WIN TIGERS. LET'S SEE WHERE YOU GO FROM HERE.

I don't believe anything the coaches or anyone says about this kid's PG ability until we watch the games. Maybe grades were a problem coming out of Tara.

You got that right. Bukamiravich is seven feet tall, Ice Reynolds is a great jump shooter, Fess Irvin is the best point guard prospect in the nation, Regis Koundjai is a great jump shooter, Rolle is capable of taking the place of Tyrus Thomas. Those are just a few that I have heard while following the basketball program.

Wow the naysayers are out. It's a good thing you guys aren't recruiters... where's the optimism?

Sure all of this this true, and I guess that this staff also missed out on Darrell Mitchell, Tyrus Thomas, Stromile Swift, Brandon Bass, Big Baby. At the end of the day, recruiting's a crap shoot. Some A-American's fall on their face, and others who were only all-district get picked 4th in the NBA draft.

So, the question to you guys is what does LSU do with this schollie that Tack left with them then? You DON't sign Marcus Thornton b/c 27 ppg in JUCO ranks is not good enough? Or, do you sign the best available unsigned PG out of LA who may not be all that much better then Ben Voogd? Or, hold all the spots for next year?

Care to go on the record? So, a year or two from now, we can judge our arm-chair recruiters?  It's always easier to shoot holes in recruits than make the picks yourself.

I'll support the coaches decison. I haven't seen Thornton nor any of the point guards play so I am in no position to make a decision. If the point guards are no better than Voogd I say wait until next year. If Thornton can shoot then take him. We desperately need someone who can shoot off the dribble.
After watching the Lady Tigers, the same can be said for them as well.

Surely Davis could be taught to set a mean screen so Thornton can get off his shot.

    I'm fresh out of it.

I think it is fairly easy to see that Paulus and McRoberts at Duke were nothing more than paper tigers. Darrell Mitchell was great at LSU for one of his four years, but I blame the coaches for that. They allowed Whipple, Thompson, and Tack to pretend to play the point for three of those four years.

I would give the scholarship to Spencer or White before Thornton. I really would. We already have at least 4 players that can play shooting guard. We have zero that can play the 1 in the SEC.

I don't think they want to come to LSU though.

    Done.

I think we'd get into a bit of trouble with the NCAA for having a pro athlete come running out onto the floor to set a screen for one of our players.
