You can make excuses for coaching errors, that doesn't mean they didn't exist. Certainly you aren't dismissing the fact that this team improved greatly after Saban's many great recruiting classes? How can you disregard his recruiting ability & it's relevance to his winning percentage?? I (and I think cgisclair) are not saying he wasn't a good coach - just that other factors greatly influenced his winning percentage.
Of course he wasn't perfect. Nobody is perfect. That's why selective criticism of successful coaches is meaningless. It makes you look like you're reaching just so you can be critical. Those who can, do. Those who can't, criticize. - Anon Brilliant people talk about ideas. Average people talk about things. Small people talk about other people. - Anon A critic is a legless man who teaches running. - Channing Pollock A cynic is prematurely disappointed with the future. - Anon Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain — and most do. - Dale Carnegie
"Those who can't think for themselves, quote others." - Cparso Just joking with you Sabanfan, I'm a fan of quotes myself and you're a cool poster. I'm saying that Saban was more than just "not perfect", he made plenty of errors. I think he was great for LSU & am not trying to be critical of him, just point out that the man did have his flaws.
Listen, I know you guys aren't bashing Saban. Honestly, I haven't read your posts, I 've been takling about Cgisclairs... But you're taking my posts and making something else out of them. I attacked cgisclairs post saying that Saban "was good enough to win because of his recruiting and motivation." You just don't make that kind of claim about a coach like Saban. I'm not talking about the "God like" status that Saban has. Im saying that if you asked every coach in college football who the best pure coach was and I guarentee Saban makes the top 5. Yes he was a great recruiter. Yes recruiting helped us improve our program. But that wasn't what I was arguing. I was arguing that Cgisclair made an outlandish statement like previous said and then came up with three flimsy reasons to back himself up... I know Cgisclair loved Saban and I know he wasn't bashing him. But saying that he won because of his recruiting and motivation just isn't a smart comment. And again, Cgisclair, I made the Parcells comment as a reference, not as a straight comparison. I was trying to compare Saban to a well known coach based on their styles. I wasn't saying Saban was going to be the next Parcells..
BTW, I am not saying that Saban was "perfect." But I do believe some of the criticisms on this thread are invalid...
