Ok here's a question for those who understand the situation at Arkansas which led to Nutt's leaving: I remember that Houston Nutt was supposedly a candidate at Nebraska last time around, but that he declined their offer and said he loved Fayetteville and Arkansas. What happened in the meantime to cause the change? Was Arkansas already dissatisfied with him? If so, why did they give him a huge salary increase to keep him from bolting to Nebraska?

It's called the heart of a Tiger.

"I play football for LSU", Les Miles

Any coach who says he plays football for the team he coaches says volumes about his commitment and how much he enjoys coaching his team. Les Miles is the true definition of what is called "A players coach". There is only a handful of coaches that fall into this category. LSU is truly blessed to have this man coaching our football team. Other teams just don't get what we have here at LSU. Come January 7, 2008 many more folks will understand.

Um this post to me seems to be the type of posts that this topic was making fun of on another site. You have to admit LSU got lucky because #1 and #2 lost. By the way mispronouncing Arkansas is what also got the Arkansas players fired up and beat you. But hey I'm not bitter or anything about LSU playing for the NC. Actually I'm glad to see an SEC team playing for it. As far as I'm concerned when it's bowl season it's time to root for the other SEC teams. It makes the SEC look better and it also means more money for the SEC.

Here's the basic gist that most people would tell you. First of all there have been a group of fans not happy with Nutt for quite a while. But the AD seems to have really liked Nutt. Perhaps because our AD (soon to be former AD) likes to have his say about the football program. Which is the reason why Holtz and Hatfield took off. But Nutt was willing to put up with it. I think the AD knew he couldn't get a better coach that was willing to put up with his meddling. So he was going to hold on to Nutt as long as he could even if there was a growing group of fans unhappy. What really changed the situation was when they tried to get some big recruits who lived northwest Arkansas a couple of years ago. This high school had one of the best teams the state had ever seen and a number of those players were seniors at the time. Many of those players weren't interesting in the type of game that Nutt played and were looking elsewhere. So the Razorbacks suddenly decided to hire their old high school coach as OC. So then those players were led to believe Arkansas was going to change it's offensive style of play and they bought into the program and signed on. But last year as the season wore on it became apparent that the new OC was being rather limited on what he could change in the offense. He was repeatedly told his system wouldn't work in the SEC. It became apparent that the athletic program only used him to get to those players. Then those players also felt they were misled. They began transferring to other schools. It was that series of events that really fractured the fan base and a much larger group of fans wanted change. Ironically the AD announced he was stepping down at the end of this year and Nutt was leaving after the LSU game. Looks like they had made some of the fans mad, the ones that have some money and they helped bring about the change of personnel at the athletic dept. Sorry for the long response but a few sentences wouldn't have told you what happened. Believe it or not this is actually the condensed version. Other events happened as well. But I'm trying to keep this somewhat short.
But yeah I admit Hog fans are going a bit overboard on the new coach. They might have some unrealistic expectations. But considering what's happened it actually seems like a good thing about Petrino coming. Even under the circumstances and even if it's only for a few years before he moves on.

Thanks Ark--I couldn't have gotten that information elsewhere! I really appreciate your filling me in. Frankly, I can understand why you're pleased to have Petrino, but my only worry would be that he would leave MIDSEASON like he did to Atlanta. Otherwise--a positive for your program and something all of the other SEC teams will have to contend with. And I don't happen to be one of those who thinks that you'll have real trouble recruiting. There is such a merry-go-round in college coaching nowadays, and even if you lose some you'll probably get some others from Kentucky or other places where Petrino has contacts. No one has ever said Petrino wasn't good at college coaching, which is why he is always mentioned whenever a job comes open. Even MEECHIGAN fans talked about him before he left the Falcons.

RE: The two recent Arky posts.

Are we lucky to be in the NC game You bet we are! It takes luck period for any team to make it into the NC game today. With that said, a team earns it right to be one of the top 6 teams in the BCS rankings. We lost two games in Triple overtime. No other one loss or two loss team can say that. Was Arkansas lucky to beat LSU this year. You bet they were. Our last game our team was very beat up. If either of your running backs had the injuries Glen Dorsey had you would have lost the game big. I'm not complaining, it is what it is. No one played the ranked team schedule we did this year. We earned our right to be there when West Virginia and Missouri lost its games and we won the SEC championship. No one in the SEC comes close to matching our record against the teams we played this year, period!

As far as the post concerning the Arkansas story. With Nutt I think change at Arkansas is good. The drama going on at your school the past 2 years was an embarrassment to the SEC and college football. Changes needed to be made and hopefully your program will never see the things that unfolded the past 2 years ever happen again. Petrino will be a breath of fresh air. Hog fans and players parents better stay out of his business or he will be gone in no time.

As an LSU fan I'm looking forward to the increased competitiveness of the SEC West. All this does is bring more exposure to our division for recruiting purposes. I believe this will be the first time a division in college football will be so center stage. Just look at these darling storyline games for television to cover.

    Arkansas/Petrino vs Ole Miss/Nutt
    Arkansas/Petrino vs Auburn/Tubberville
    Bama/Saban vs LSU/Miles
    Miss State/Croom vs Bama/Saban

    Did I miss one?

P.S. Welcome to our board and please come back.

Yeah there certainly is risk with Petrino. But with so much negative press against him, I think it helps in that I don't think he'll leave quite as early. Of course you have to take things like some of the Razorback forums with a grain of salt. Sports forums has a tendency of bring out some some rather vocal people. And with so much drama going on it seems to have made people even more 'vocal'. Anyway thanks for the invitation. I've actually been lurking for a while. Just thought I'd finally jump in. Of course I root for the Razorbacks but if they can't win the SEC West I'd just assume it be LSU then. I don't care too much for the other SEC West teams. I've 'met' some Louisiana people on some non sports forums and have become friends with them. So I guess that has helped increase my interest in LSU as well.
