I cab see any coach saying something like that in the heat of the emotional moment but the players should know better than to take his words at face value.

First thing I thought of, now did he get specific or did he leave it at "he needs to pay"?

Nick Saban has probably said that hundreds of times.

A continuation of the all to common, and pitifully rationalized, assault on authority. Where will it end?

Now we're getting to the real cause.

If you listen carefully, kids will often admit to "some form" guilt. Example and true story. Last week I had a kid accused of grabbing a girl's but walking up the stairs. He told me he didn't grab her but, rather, he grabbed her jacket.

Had another boy (6th grader) recently say he didn't punch another kid; rather, pushed him. As he said he pushed him he motioned with his arm but his hand was balled up in a fist.

Still another accused of jumping on another student's back said he didn't jump on it but was pushed and put his hands up while falling. Problem for him was when he told me, he raised his hands higher than those, "Hands up don't shoot" fellars which, obviously, isn't logical. I used that point to secure his full confession.

One time I asked my oldest daughter, "How'd that dent get on your car?" She immediately answered, "I don't know." Not a logical answer. If someone asked me that I would say, "What dent?"

Sounds like you should have a law degree to be a teacher.

You have no idea how careful we have to be with wording of things that are discipline related. It can mean the difference in an expulsion or not. I send referrals back if teachers put anything that's not concrete. I don't want any of these sweeping generalizations such as, "He's out of control" or "He continuously disrupts class" crap. First of all, how to you tell a parent what, exactly, their kid did? Further, if it's circumstantial, good chance it won't stand. Example, I walk into a bathroom, smell smoke and hear a toilet flush and a student walks out. No ciggie, no suspension.

I usually get them to confess. I begin by asking if they are left or right handed. If they say left, I ask them to show me their left hand and I smell it. I can smell smoke a mile away since I quit smoking years ago.
