being elite is relative to the competition. the 07 team was elite because we were the best of everyone in what was a down year nation wide. This years team could possibly beat the 07 team head to head, but because UF, bama, texas etc are better, they are considered elite.
My take.... your recent history has made your program elite.... doesn't mean you'll have an elite team each year. (see USC) Tennessee lost to Florida and Bama by less than LSU, but currently they have neither an elite program.... nor an elite team.
