As of now, I don’t think Joe is going very high. He wasn’t even a top 5 qb on McShay’s list as of the vandy game. A lot can change, but right now, he’d be there for the saints.
Kiki, you know as well as I do that college success does not translate into a high draft pick. There are innumerable heisman winners and qualifiers who were not drafted in the first round. He’s a damn great college QB right now, but that doesn’t mean he’s going high if the draft we’re today.
Your are correct that college success isn't a guaranty, but what about him tells you he won't go high? He's got size, and by that I mean both the height to see the field and the bulk to take the pounding. He's shown both arm strength and accuracy. He makes good decisions with the ball. He's mobile. And he's flourishing while running the college equivalent of one of the most respected NFL passing offenses. In short, he's an NFL scout's wet dream.
To be clear, my point is only that he wouldn’t go that high if the draft were today. None of the analysts have him high right now. I don’t think he’ll eventually go top 10 and probably not top 15 because his arm strength is lacking for the NFL, his release is a bit slow, and his entire career’s success is in the shotgun and spread offense. I disagree that LSU runs a pro style offense if that’s what you’re saying. Every snap is out of the gun, and usually with 4-5 wide receivers. There is very little variation in formation, they haven’t run the ball very often, and they don’t run almost any screens. *Edit: the offense is also highly tempo based. Also, there are a number of other QBs in this draft with significant skill sets that he has to compete against, like Fromm and Tua.
I am looking at his overall measurables and they are off the charts. Height 6'4" weight 218, foot speed, pocket presence, intelligence, field vision and toughness. Right now I think he is the first QB taken based on 6 games into the season. That could change but we are talking right now and I don't see anyone better.
Nobody had Daniel Jones rated that high yet the Giants made him a top 5 pick. Burrow's arm strength is adequate and his skills and intangibles will make some NFL fall in love with him. It only takes one. Remember that the Broncos drafted Tim Tebow in the first round. Drafting a QB is a crapshoot. Ryan Leaf was rated over Peyton Manning by some NFL people.
You’re right, and it’s more than just possible he’ll go before the Saints pick. But I’m not willing to say that it’s more likely than not right now.
