I've been thinking about this topic and how "binding" such an arrangement is on either side. What if a new administration comes in and decides to clean house or simply fire the HCIW because his side of the ball hasn't been carrying its weight? What if the HCIW finds a better gig before its his turn? I'm sure it will come down to whether there is a contract etc. Anyone know how this is supposed to work?
i'm sure each contract is a little different. pretty sure i read somewhere that if Jimbo wasn't head coach by a certain date, he got a fat check (few million dollars). It didn't go down like that, so we may have to wait and see if a situation like that ever actually plays out.
Keep an eye on Texas. Muschamp is still waiting on Brown. Although he has had offers to leave, but has chosen to stay. Mack Brown: Will Muschamp must wait | Berry Tramel's Blog
Head coach in waiting at some schools, not so good (maybe FSU). But if you had a definite shot at the Longhorns job, that would definitely be worth waiting on. You have Tx. to recruit, and you're the big dog. Heck, you never have to leave the state to load up with 5* and 4* kids. Your program won't have money problems. Life in Austin is pretty nice, humidity is low, limestone hills, its nice. If I was Muschamp, I'd wait for that job.
On Will, I've got mixed feelings. If Richt gets let go, Will should get the first call. He looks to be waiting for a long time on Mack. Jimbo was a win all the way. He had the contract in hand. Another former LSU DC got a HCIW offer and passed. I think he wants to be a little more South.
Mack Brown is in his fifties. Unless Muschamp has private knowledge of Mack's definitive intentions, he should wait. It could be twenty years.
Current info on Muschamp's deal: Muschamp signs one-year coaching extension Looks like Muschamp gets an extra $500K a year to wait. The length of the wait would make it questionable. But for the Texas job..... It may be worth it to wait, and not have to take a second tier job like head coach at Tulsa to prove yourself.
