good post...all except that there is no possible way Sheppard will red shirt next year. not only that, he will see the field ALOT!!
You're probably right but if I had my way I'd put the red shirt on him. Even if he REALLY is as good as everybody thinks he's going to be I don't see a down side to letting him adjust to college life and college football without game pressure for a year. Other than the fact that it keeps him off the field.
problem with red shirting a guy like RS is that he is more likely to leave after his third year ...might as well get him in as a true freshman and possibly get 4 years out of him. especially since he will be a much needed offensive weapon where ever he lines up. with jojo leaving...that opens up a spot for him at WR if nothing else, although Im sure he will be used in a RP sort of way as well. bottom line, this kid has to be on the field ASAP. he is already showing much needed leadership skills that I believe LSU lacked last season.
I wish the young man the best, gotta give it to him, he give us his best and he can say he has wore the LSU jersey and ran out onto the field at Tiger Stadium. Harvard degree sounds like a great way to end your college days . Best of Luck to Him. And Man did he Take some Hits :lol::lol:
He's enrolled at LSU now, so he is, in fact, getting an opportunity to settle in before the pressure starts. Of course, you do know he wants very bady to play in '09? That's why he's enrolled now...
This is very true. It's the name that carries the prestige, not that the people are any smarter when they leave than any other person who applies him or herself in any college. I've had this discussion with my husband many times, regarding our daughters. He thinks they should shoot for the Ivy League, just because kids from Plano get accepted to the schools up there every year. I would prefer that they stay closer to home, for one, and don't see spending a gazillion dollars on their educations (it'll be expensive enough @ UT, Texas A & M, LSU, OU, Baylor, TCU, etc.) Plus, I'd like them to actually enjoy their K-12 years, not always worried about what freakin' college they get into.
Yeah I know he does want to play very much in 09. If I recall correctly he's been quoted as saying something like he wants to contribute next season no matter the position -- qb, wide receiver, db, special teams, whatever. And I love that attitude. I mean I REALLY love that attitude. If I could, I'd take that attitude out for dinner, buy it flowers and take long romantic walks with it. It reminds me of how Hester played (and still does even in the NFL) when he was here. Individual glory is irrelevant; team is paramount. But is it worth the risk of Sheppard getting his head taken off on kick off coverage just so he can contribute? And if he doesn't red shirt, and assuming JJ remains the starter (albeit likely in some platoon situation with Shep) until he leaves, then in the 09 season we've got JJ, a true soph, splitting time with Shep, a true frosh. In 10 we've got JJ, junior, splitting time with Shep, a soph. Then let's say JJ goes pro after 10. So now we've got Shep, a junior, backed up probably by Garrett, a red shirt soph, in 11. Now let's say Shep goes pro. So now we've got Garrett, a junior, backed up by who knows who in 12. And let's say Garrett goes pro . . . . That's three different starting quarterbacks in four years. Not exactly stability at the position. And I know there's a lot of assumption there. But even if JJ stays for his senior year, the next year is Shep's senior year and the next year is Garrett's senior year. With Shep (and Garrett) red shirting, you space out the transitions a bit and have a little more stability there. Or maybe I'm just being a Debbie Downer. :geauxtige:geauxtige:geauxtige
