no, if it is in self defense, you can fire multiple shots. self defense means "fearing bodily harm". if on the first shot you do not know if you neutralized your threat, certainly fire more. you are still fearing bodily harm. most states say if you are not fearing bodily harm, you must retreat instead of shoot. the exception is the "castle rule" in which you are also protecting your home. you obviously do not have to retreat when inside your own home. just out of curiousity, do you have a license to carry concealed in louisiana? in oklahoma, to get a license, you must not only have a certificate of training to prove you are proficient with a handgun, but that certificate of training also includes an all day class on just the gun laws in the state of oklahoma. it might be worth your while to find one of those classes just so you have a full understanding of the law.
But one shot may not always do the job. Even with that cute little .357 you pack. Sure, if you put one in the bad guy's back while he's running away or when he's face down, you're gonna have a tough time explaining that to the DA. Or in the case of that store owner, two different caliber rounds from two different guns.. You're just asking to catch a case. If someone's attacking you and you double tap them center of mass and put one in their forehead, you've got a little more of a defense for your lawyer to work with. The cops will probably commend you on a job well done on top of that.
I don't have a ccl. I have been trying to get my wife to come with me and take it. In la. You can have your gun in your vehicle. That's where it stays. We don't carry them. The wife will when she goes to a public restroom when she's on the road. I never carried a firearm in public. I do want a ccl but have not yet. I found out at a gun store in town someone that does it. It's hard to get time.
in oklahoma you need a lic to carry your gun in your vehicle. (exception is gun locked away, unloaded, if just transporting it, not using it for protection.) i highly recommend taking the course, just to get an understanding of the laws in your state.
IMO over kill will show that you feared for your life more than one precise shot...best to unload the clip. Just DON'T reload.
Darlin', I must advise you that three aimed shots including a headshot is what I'd want from SEALS and assassins and double-naught spies who train for years. But ordinary schmucks like you and me can get killed trying to get off aimed shots at hearts and faces. My advice to is just point it at the center of body mass and get that first shot off. And keep shooting if it's your .22. Unload the magazine.
Well, the double tap obviously comes first. And I will fire as many as I need to get those two in the heart. Then its one to the head. No fears, I will unload a clip if I have to.
This is why we go practice shooting our weapons at the range (or if you've got some property, even better) on a regular basis. Having a gun is great, but pretty much useless if you can't use it effectively and don't practice with it. There are a lot of folks that think "Well, I got a gun now. I'll be ok if something happens", but literally couldn't hit a target to save their life. These are the ones that end up a) getting killed because they couldn't hit the bad guy, or b) kill some innocent bystander because they just shoot wildly like Yosemite Sam or something . If you shoot regularly, practice double tapping (if your range allows). It's a good idea in my opinion because aside from helping to improve ones target reacquisition skills, it makes putting 2 rounds on target second-nature should you chose to do it. If I hit an attacker square in the chest with two 10mm rounds, chances are IF he's still up he's slowed down enough for me to put the third one where it needs to go for the coup de gras.. If he's down and done with after two, great... I save 50 cents. But I agree with you in that the initial shot(s) should always be placed center of mass.
