Here's my take on the situation with Miles/Benton/Randle.... I don't condone what Miles did, but it happens everywhere in college football. Miles isn't the first coach to pull a scholly last minute to land another recruit, and he won't be the last. But my question is, why is it "ok" for high school kids to change their mind's? Bell and Jackson gave their commitment to Miles and last minute changed their mind's. Every year recruits commit to schools and then on signing day do a 180. But when a coach does that to a recruit, he's criticized. It's win now or your fired today in sports, so coaches have to do whatever it takes to win. Again, I don't agree with what happened. I think that if a coach offers a scholly to a recruit, he shouldn't be allowed to revoke it unless the recruit says no, obviously. On the other hand, if a player commits to a school he shouldn't be allowed to change his mind. Now if a recruit fails to qualify, then all bets are off. So recruits and coaches change their mind's all the time, it's just the nature of the business.
Both of them are wrong. And what Miles did doesnt happen everywhere. Actually, it almost never happens that late. Its not that he had to pick a player that is the problem, it is the timing. Big difference. His Lesticles shrunk imo after that.
Yep, Emmett is carrying them around in his pocket at the moment. Next year will be very interesting to say the least. Curious how many fans will recognize it when this bill comes due.
Actually it does. Going to court over commitment | Scholarship For Athletes I agree with you that the timing sucked. Hell, the whole thing of Miles letting Randle and his father dictate to him pisses me off. But I guess Miles is doing what he thinks is best. Time will tell.
Not the night before nsd, which was my point. And offers and commitments are different stories - that story is completely different. Offers are pulled every single day. There aren't thousands of cases with committed recruits.
ucla pulled Toma's schollie today or yesterday. Done I think because Te'o is Toma's classmate/neighbor and decided to play for the irish and not the bruins. Funny too as Toma consequently received an offer from Charlie. Sadly, not all recruits have good and talented friends like Te'o.
Les Miles was stuck between a rock and a hard place, no doubt. I hate the fact Les Miles allowed Randle's dad to hold this university hostage. It sucks in the worst possible way. I too am disappointed Miles handled it this way. It reflects very poorly on what is an otherwise man of great character. I have to believe that he was not comfortable doing what he thought he HAD to do. In fact, I am sure he was really torn about it. Who knows, maybe he was extremely close to telling Randle to take a hike. We'll never know. What's next, Randle's dad telling Miles that his kid will transfer after his true freshman season if he isn't the starter by the time SEC play rolls around? All the while, Benton qualifies and becomes a dynamic force for Auburn? Stay tuned. This saga may have another chapter or two in it.
I don't give two sh!ts about UCLA. They are doing what they can to stay afloat and compete against USC - and failing. LSU is one of the flagship schools in the country today. Miles should not have done this. Regardless of how LSU made out, it will come up in the future with other recruits. Other coaches will mention it, and it won't soon be forgotten. That doesn't even touch the issue of a parent running your program, ala Nutt/Mustain. It will take a lot of beer to wash this one down.
