We all do. In an ideal world that would be great. But coaches who talk like that to blue-chippers do not end up in the top-5, I think. Top players like Randle who are seriously considering other teams will hear "We don't want you as much as we like this other guy", and they will walk. You wouldn't like it if Randle had told Les to shove it after that speech and signed with Oklahoma . . . and then Benton failed to qualify for the third straight time. Les gets the big money to make the tough calls and to make damn sure they are in LSU's best interests. We win 10 games next year and no one will ever care about Benton again.
well if the kid was surprised, of course your coaches a few hundred miles away were as well. auburn was his fed bailout/stimulus package.
I don't think it was well handled either but I'm not acting all high and mighty about it like some here are.
fair enough. agree 1-4. somehow somewhere this thread took a turn saying that everyone who "rationalized" for miles is a hypocrite about attacking other coaches who screw over recruits. i'm not quite sure where this is coming from. i really don't care what other coaches are doing with recruits unless they are our messing with our recruits. if meyer/saban/kiffin etc pull some kid's offer at the 11th hour i really could not care less. well unless of course the kid is good and we needed him on our team and had a spot for him. there are too many broad sweeping generalizations made in this thread, i even made some. sorry for that.
i think high and mighty would be the ones justifying it. thats the easy thing to do. or simply ignoring it while saying thats the nature of the business, like yourself. or is it high and mighty when you call out pete carroll for anything similar yet acceptable when its us. different standards when it placates you. the point is, how did you feel about miles with this honorable/integrity, good-guy label he's been given by many? . I think most who believed it are simply saying they are disappointed in how he handled it and would like LSU to be held to a higher standard. Not held hostage like Houston Nutt was with Mustain and a gaggle of meddling parents. Same situation just to a lesser degree. kids and parents dictating how you run your program- publically. Bad precedent when Randle is starting ahead of another kid whose parents think they are playing favorites even if deserved. absolutely how it works.
What is bush league is the kid not making the grade for two years and holding a spot for him. Sounds to me like if he would have made the grade he would have had a scholarship offered to him twice. I would hate to have it pulled from me after trying so hard to make the grades but blame is to be placed with the kid not Les. He put himself in this situation. Les rolled with the kid who he would not have to worry about.
it is what it is. j/k. i'm disappointed in miles but i understand his decision. i guess that's where i'm coming from and yes it's possible to do both. as for his label, there's honorable people with integrity all over this world that make mistakes and/or choose the path of least resistance/do what they feel is best for the greater good. it doesn't make them horrible people. but i also understand that there are people that have ideals and standards and expect them to be followed to the letter at all times.
As it is, we only got ONE receiver this year...a good one, but the ONLY one. If we had gotten Benton and he does well enough to leave early, we'll be left with Tolliver and greenies. Not good. RR was the better choice, regardless of talent. And we seem to be forgetting that Benton was ON TRACK for last year, but then at the last minute he mysteriously DROPPED OUT of Hargrave. Yeah, he sounds REALLY committed. He may not even play at Auburn. The clearinghouse hasn't even cleared him to play yet. It's an easy decision, IMO, and I support Miles in it.
