Greg Paulus Stories are Officially out of Control

The Green Bay Packers aren't the only ones who are interested in Greg Paulus.

According to sources close to the situation, the former Duke point guard was in Ann Arbor on Tuesday meeting with Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez about the possibility of playing this season for the Wolverines.

The 6-foot-1 Paulus, who was the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a standout quarterback at Christian Brothers Academy in New York, has one year of eligibility left for football after playing four years of basketball at Duke.

He watched Michigan practice Tuesday afternoon and could fit in with Rodriguez's spread offense. The Wolverines don't have a clear-cut starting quarterback, and Paulus could come in and play immediately.

Two Michigan freshmen, Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson, will likely compete with Nick Sheridan for the starting spot. Sheridan, however, has a small fracture in his lower right leg. Rodriguez said that Sheridan's injury won't require surgery, but he should be out two to three more weeks.

Sources also told FOXSports.com that Paulus, who worked out last Thursday for the Packers in Durham, N.C., has been contacted by a half-dozen NFL teams and several other college programs.

Paulus, 22, started three seasons for Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski but came off the bench this season. Coming out of high school, he was recruited by numerous big-time football programs, and schools such as Notre Dame would have allowed him to play both sports.

Paulus, however, has not played football since graduating high school, when he threw for 11,763 yards and 152 touchdowns in 45 career games and led CBA to a 42-3 record in four seasons. His younger brother, Mike, is a reserve quarterback at North Carolina.

Paulus, according to one source, is still exploring the possibility of continuing his basketball career but was caught off-guard when a Packers scout contacted him a couple weeks ago after the Blue Devils' season ended with a loss to Villanova in the Sweet 16.

why hate on a man to play in the nfl? it is everybodys dream growing up.
i find it kinda weird how he still can play college football at a different school than he is attended for 4 yrs

How the hell does he have eligibility left? You get 4 years of play with one year you can take off for a redshirt. I'm confused.

Cutcliffe: Paulus invited to spring tryout

Cutcliffe said Wednesday he's told the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Paulus, a standout quarterback in high school who just finished his fourth year of basketball at Duke, that he could try out for a spot at inside receiver in Duke's last six spring practices.

According to NCAA eligibility guidelines, student-athletes generally must sit out a year if they transfer from one four-year school to another. Because student-athletes are allowed to redshirt for medical or other reasons, they are granted 10 semesters of eligibility.
In the case of Paulus, because he was never a basketball redshirt at Duke, as an undergraduate transfer he would be eligible to play football at another school, assuming there are no extenuating circumstances concerning his eligibility.

The Blue Devils point guard visited Michigan to explore the possibility of transferring there to play football, Duke spokesman Art Chase said Wednesday.

Paulus’ visit came Tuesday, the same day word leaked that he worked out for the Green Bay Packers in advance of the NFL draft.

Paulus thought about resuming his football career at Duke, but coach David Cutcliffe’s team is set at quarterback with Thaddeus Lewis preparing for his fourth year as the starter. Paulus hasn’t taken a snap in a game since 2004, when he was a high school quarterback in New York.

He would seem to fit better in Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez’s read-option scheme than in the pro-style system favored by Cutcliffe, who considered trying Paulus at slot receiver.

“He’s a quarterback at heart, but there was no way he was going to be able to compete and play quarterback for us,” Cutcliffe said.

Paulus, who played four years of basketball at Duke but never played football there, would have one season of football eligibility.

Michigan spokesman David Abluaf declined comment and Rodriguez has repeatedly said he only talks about players on his roster.

The quarterback situation at Michigan has been a question mark ever since Rodriguez was hired in December 2007.

After freshman quarterback Tate Forcier enrolled early to practice this spring with the Wolverines, Steven Threet announced he was transferring and Nick Sheridan was sidelined with a broken leg after sharing snaps last season for the Wolverines.

Rodriguez insists Forcier will have to continue to compete with Sheridan and the speedy Denard Robinson when he gets to Ann Arbor this summer.

If Paulus ends up in the mix, it wouldn’t be the first time Rodriguez found a quarterback playing another sport.

His third-stringer at West Virginia in 2005 was J.R. House, a minor-league catcher seven years removed from his record-setting passing days as a high school star in Nitro, W.Va.

I think thats the wrong decision. If the packers are willing to draft him in any round, Id go. Id rather be getting paid to be awful than not. lol
