For those of you who don't know, what Tirk is referring to is the Superman logo Shaq has tattooed on his arm, like the one I think Kevin Faulk has tattooed on his arm. I've never been into basketball, not even LSU basketball, unfortunately (I honestly did miss out on a lot of great LSU basketball moments just because basketball isn't that interesting to me). But I did go to a couple games to watch Shaq play, and I don't remember anything about the LSU Band playing the Superman theme for him, but honestly, they might have done so, which is where they got the idea to do so for Faulk (as I remember they did), who came to LSU shortly after we had Shaq. As for those few games I saw Shaq play for LSU, I remember the P-Mac had a "Shaq-o-meter" that would register the crowd noise whenever Shaq made a big play -- or did I just make that up as well? Now here's a memory I have that I think is completely made up: at one point in my life, I remembered that sometime in the late 80's to mid 90's, that I went to an LSU basketball game, and that the Mike the Tiger we had at the time was just a little Tiger cub, no bigger than a dog, and that the LSU cheerleaders had him on a leash during the game, and even let LSU fans from the crowd pet him. To make it worse, I think it might have been against a strong Kentucky team, and I thought the little Mike the Tiger was acting hostile to the Kentucky players. Now that's a memory that I think I made up.
Kevin Faulk is nowhere close to a Billy Cannon. Billy Cannon was the marquee player on the '58-'59 Tigers (Cannon finished in back-to-back Heisman votes during those two years), one of the greatest teams in all of college football history (better than any Notre Dame team or Michigan team or Bear Bryant Alabama team, as I have shown elsewhere here on TF). Hell, Hollywood even made a movie in the late 80's loosely based on Billy Cannon of LSU (Everybody's All American). Cannon is the most legendary figure in all of LSU football history. Kevin Faulk is like Tommy Hodson, both were amazing heroes during their time at LSU, and both set all the LSU career records at their respective positions, but neither was the greatest we had (like guys like Cannon and Alexander at RB or Y.A. Tittle and Bert Jones at QB).
I just found out that, on Google Books, you can read the book Game of My Life: Memorable Moments of Tigers Football (2006) by Marty Mule, where the author choose the 1996 LSU vs. Houston game as the only game to talk about in his chapter about Kevin Faulk (Chapter 10)... "All LSU had going for it at this point [down 14-34 to Houston] was No. 3 Faulk ... Faulk was the catalyst of a remarkable Tiger comeback ... if there was ever one, this seemed like a job for Superman--Faulk's childhood hero and whose symbol...is tattooed on his left bicep ... [the Houston game was] the signature performance of Faulk's notable career ... Houston turned out to be a magic moment. No one can remember the Tigers coming back from so far behind in the last 15 minutes, but unquestionably this was LSU's biggest comeback since...1977."
Much as I admire Kevin and I agree he's truly one of the greatest thats ever worn the purple and gold. I gotta give it to Billy Cannon...he was awesome, and Heisman winner:thumb:
Interesting look at what Belichick has to say: http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/feb/01/trying-to-make-heads-or-tails-of-it/
