I'm guessing Brown played in the 60's. Didn't he play for like 8-9 years? Still on top when he retired I thought. Even so, lots of these games on tv back in the 60's? I don't think so, and certainly not anything like the last 30 years. I think if you can go back 50+ years, you can just go back. What, Babe Ruth is not one of the greatest 'cause nobody here saw him play? (with the exception of a select few)
that's the great thing about opinions. I don't have to give a rat's behind what everyone else has said or thought about the guy. ESPN and former players don't make my opinions. I do. and it has nothing about Cobb, really. It just has to do more with just how great the others truly were. Hell, the guy I picked is an a-hole. For instance, 4,000 hits will never even be close to replicated.
Just looked it up. He retired in '65 Don't know, I've only been breathing for 30 years now. My grandfather said during the War, he would listen to Yankees games on the radio in New Orleans all the time. Yeah, I can spit out someone else's opinion that I've read somewhere, but it's kind of hard for me to compare them to guys that I have seen play.
Then the name of the thread should be "greatest of your time" or "greatest I have seen in person", not "greatest of all time". Considering how many records the guy had(and still has), how long he held them(or still does) and that the ones that have been broken were not done so by one individual, but several players breaking different records, his work speaks for itself. I'm not trying to convert anyone. Just happens to be my opinion that he belongs in this discussion. Most people have picked different players and I don't see anything wrong with that at all. However, to suggest that he doesn't belong in this discussion because you didn't pick him, you didn't see him play, or he just wasn't pleasant enough, is just silly. Don't mean you specifically nooch, but I think you get what I mean.
Yeah, he does belong in the conversation. Just saying I think that's why some of the older guys haven't been mentioned. Like some said DiMaggio, some said Mays. I really can't argue which was better, since I never saw them play.
if you think red remembers anything from the 60's I got some news for ya. so red has to scratch russell from his list. :hihi::hihi:
