Good thread and some interesting choices. Baseball: If Mantle could have stayed healthy & sober he would probably have been the greatest. Mays was the greatest all around player I saw. Football: Jim Brown Basketball: I tend to agree with Red that Russell was the most complete player. Hockey: Gretzky Tennis: Sampras although Federer will surpass Pete before he's done. Golf: Nicklaus although Tiger will surpass Jack before he's done. Boxing: Ali
I think most people here are mentioning people they've seen play. Other than tiga, not many poeple on here are old enough to remember Cobb. How many suspensions did Bonds get for being a prick? What about T.O.?
how many times did Bonds or T.O. intentionally spike other players, etc... you can say what you want. Had that dude played now, he'd have lasted 2 years maybe.
Football - Jacob Hester (not even close imo) otherwise the real LT Basketball - Jordan Baseball - Willy Mayes Golf - Tiger Fishing - Charlie Moore
Hard to say that for sure. The game he played was a lot tougher and more rugged than the game of today.
Sure that seems reasonable, but I doubt many here saw the likes of Dimaggio, Russell, or Jim Brown so I call BS on that one.
Basketball: Jordan (not even a close second) Baseball: Barry Bonds Football: Walter Peyton Golf: Tiger Hockey: Gretzky Nascar: Dale Earnhardt Wrestling: Stone Cold Boxing: Ali
Thanks, I will. Certainly entitled to your opinion. I do think it's funny that everyone offers their's about who is best, but this is the one player you seize upon to dispute? When his greatness in the game is not disputed by a single sports writer, author, authority, announcer, commentator, or player. Spoken like a very young man.
Well, Russell played until the late 60's. Any going by the thread we had about "Who was head coach when you became a Tiger fan", I think we have quite a few here that would remember him. Not sure when Jim Brown called it quits. I'll give you DiMaggio, he hung 'em up in '51 (maybe '52) so probably not a lot here who would have seen much of him.
